STANBUL (Reuters) â A suicide bomber thought to be from Syria killed at least 10 people, many of them German tourists, in Istanbulâs historic heart on Tuesday, an attack senior security officials said was probably planned by Islamic State.
President Tayyip Erdogan condemned the bombing in Sultanahmet square, near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, major tourist sites in the center of one of the worldâs most visited cities. He said a Syrian was thought responsible and that the blast would only harden Turkeyâs resolve in fighting terrorism.
Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the bomber had been identified from body parts at the scene, and was a Syrian national born in 1988 whose links were being investigated.
Sources in Prime Minister Ahmet Davutogluâs office said most of those killed were Germans and he had spoken by phone with Chancellor Angela Merkel to express condolences. Merkel earlier said she was very worried Germans might be among the victims.
Several bodies lay on the ground in the square, also known as the Hippodrome of Constantinople, in the immediate aftermath. It was not densely packed at the time of the explosion, according to a police officer working there, but small groups of tourists had been wandering around.
âThis incident has once again shown that as a nation we should act as one heart, one body in the fight against terror. Turkeyâs determined and principled stance in the fight against terrorism will continue to the end,â Erdogan told a lunch for Turkish ambassadors, in a speech broadcast live on television.
Norwayâs foreign ministry said one Norwegian man was injured and was being treated in hospital. The Dogan news agency said nine Germans and one Peruvian were also wounded.

News flash, Merk. They already ARE!
Carpet shills are everywhere in Sultanahmet. I find it suspect that none are dead.
Turkey's been fighting terrorism?
Any particular brand of terrorism?
Obama will say don’t rush to judgement, we don’t know what the motivation is. Probably just more workplace violence. In the Chattanooga case CNN asked if the shooter was a hunter or a paintballer.
Time to bring back the Crusades! Do not stop till the terrorist are put back into the Bottle! We need to put an end to this Political correctness with the muslims, they are the enemy and they know with the weakness of the liberal leftist mentality they can get away with what ever they do! Just look what happened in the past 6 months. The Us, France , Germany, all the Scandinavian Countries women being raped and abused buy the so-called peaceful religion of Islam! Time to stop this charade, Time after time, they have shown they are not an ally of anyone who wants peace. This must end and it starts today.
Typical Muzzies, biting the hand that feeds them.
When the facts on the ground harm your political goals, perhaps it's time to reevaluate your agenda. I hope Merkel will reconsider her desire to populate her country with millions of non-Germans who hate German culture. There is another potential source of a new generation, and it's both much safer and completely natural (not to mention fun).

It’s ISIS. And yes, a LOT of the fighters on the ISIS side ARE Syrian.
The Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, is an Alawite Muslim, as is most of his regime. The Islamic State is a Sunni Muslim organization, and offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, founded by and for the advancement of the Sunni Wahhabi fundamentalist ideology. Syria is made up of elements of Alawite, Sunni, and Shi’ite Muslim sects, and right now, the scorpion called Sunni and the scorpion called Shi’a are in a death struggle on a number of fronts, which may break into a much more general confrontation. The Alawites are probably much closer in their doctrines to the Shi’ites that to the Sunnis, which goes a little ways in explaining the odd alliance between Russia and Syria, which is a bridge to Iran.
Turkey is fighting “terrorism” but it is the Kurds whom they consider to be the terrorists. Kurds, however, are not suicide bombers. The Kurds drive OTHER people to commit suicide.
The guns must first be turned against the members of our own kind who refuse to see the savages for what they are. The savages cannot be dealt with till the war for control of the various societies is over. Pansy @$$ idiot liberals have to be driven out of power before any solution can be implemented.
If Germans can't muster up the will power to oust Merkel, they are not yet ready to face the savages.
Muslims believe that Medina and Mecca are protected by Allah. If those cites were nuked into glass parking lots, it would make many Muslims rethink their religion and their god.
I think you are onto something.
We cancelled our November vacation to Istanbul but still had to spend a night there due to our plane schedule. While I was walking through the Hippodrome — where this blast was — a Turkish carpet salesman asked me “Where have all the Americans gone?” I told him as long as muslins kill innocents they won’t be back and as long as his government support ISIS. Trying to be polite he ended the conversation by saying “We like Obama.” to which I replied “We don’t.”
You're probably right, but I think it would be even more effective if we could direct a small asteroid to hit Mecca.
