MANCHESTER, N. H. - Republican Donald Trump on Monday said he would slash funding for the federal education department and Environmental Protection Agency if elected president.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal and New Hampshire's WMUR at a local diner here, the celebrity businessman said he would do "tremendous cutting" of the federal government if elected. Education policy, he said, should be returned to the states, and he said he would end the Common Core education standards, which conservatives view as federal overreach.
"Education should be local and locally managed," said Mr. Trump, who also criticized the administration's environmental policies. "The Environmental Protection Agency is the laughing stock of the world."

GOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Trump !
It’s an end. The Trump Democrats will not be pleased.
Twenty percent of Democrats (the non-university, the non-welfare, non-gift-class)....believe in Trump and would readily agree on the EPA and education cuts. Even if you go around minority groups from either the Hispanic or black community....you find Trump-enthusiasts. Nationally, I think he could take sixty-percent of the vote. He might have issues in California and Hawaii....but I think he’s got this pretty much locked into place now.
Twenty percent of Democrats (the non-university, the non-welfare, non-gift-class)....believe in Trump and would readily agree on the EPA and education cuts. You of course have no statistics to back your wishful thinking.
Bottom-line is that Trump sticks a dagger in the heart of what Democrats consider for themselves dear... children and the environment.
But they shouldn't worry, we are a few weeks from Iowa which is why Trump is saying this. If he becomes President, he will flip-flop and make a celebrated deal with his beloved Democrats to increase those institutions.
Now that the table is set, decide which agencies, both old and new should be eliminated. Department of Education is an easy one since education should be at the State level. Whack Education. New EPA. Eliminate the EPA, and empower the states with environment issues. continue on...
This is easy and Trump will be all set to execute his plans with Congress in January 2017.
I would LOVE to have the backing of the fed when I’m voting “no” to spending in the school board meetings
good plan
...and you have no statistics to back your last sentence
Good plan.!
.......and I bet Trump already has most of this ( if not all) in place and ready to execute
He’s a visionary.
...and you have no statistics to back your last sentenceNot needed. I have Trump's history of flip-flopping. Which you need to inherently ignore in order to support him.
Thanks for adding. :)
Too early in the morning for acrimony
You don’t like him.....simple.....don’t vote for him
Thee are plenty of us who recognize the blessing he is!
I don’t know what your complaint is when I thanked you.
But anyway, thanks again for adding... showing how you need to ignore his flip-flop self serving politics.
Just as long as The Donald, if questioned as to which agencies would be under consideration for elimination under his watch, does not commit the same error that Rick Perry did under prodding from Mitt Romney in 2011, regarding the Executive Branch offices he would eliminate.
On the debate of November 9, 2011, Perry was discussing his jobs plan and his flat tax plan when he said: “And I will tell you, it is three agencies of government when I get there that are gone. Commerce, Education, and the... what’s the third one there? Let’s see.”
Romney chimed in with, “EPA?”
Flustered, Perry responded, “EPA, there you go, no...” with laughter from the candidate and the audience.
What Perry meant to say, but could not get it out until later in the debate, was the Department of Energy.
But by then, the moment had long passed for Rick Perry.
Every agency which imposes their own regulations with the force of federal law should be eliminated. It is the job of legislatures to legislate, not unelected appointees of unaccountable agencies. That’s simply tyrannical. Example: Bureau of Land Management.
Slashing that money would actually free local districts and let them educate their students.
We as conservatives bitch and moan about Obama unconstitutional spending without congressional approval..
I'm not disapproving his idea, just wondering if Freepers forgotten how all this works...
Funding is a Congressional mandate not the POTUS...
It goes a lot farther back then 1960 their are a lot of extra constitutional federal agencies. NF, NP, BLM for three.
All those agencies lands could and should be given over to state control.
We haven't forgotten how it's supposed to work, but since obummer, it hasn't worked that way.
The next President, Cruz or Trump, will have very few problems with the next congress critters.
When the congress critters see the true will of the American people, they will jump into line because they want to keep their little fiefdom in DC.
Congress critters are the least principled people on the planet, lower than just a plain ambulance chasing lawyer, lower than a street drug dealer, lower than a big city street hooker......
The media can spin the money issue but Trump will beat on the local control aspect. That's a winning issue with a lot of independents and even democrats who are tired of having to pay taxes for government schools but have to find a way to send their kids to a private school if they want them to learn to read and write before they graduate high school.
That's going to swing both independents and democrats into his corner because even a majority of teachers in K-12 public schools know damn well that throwing money at unionized schools dictated to from afar is a dead end. You can see that in the number of teachers who instantly drop out of the union when a court says they can't be forced to pay dues to one.
