Donald Trump asks a Reno audience to weigh in on Ted Cruz’s eligibility
Washington Post ^ | 1/10/16 | Jenna Johnson

RENO, Nev. -- After days of coyly raising questions about Ted Cruz's eligibility to be president, given that he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, Donald Trump let his audience weigh in at a rally Sunday afternoon.

"Is he a natural-born citizen?" the Republican White House hopeful asked several thousand gathered in a Reno ballroom. Members of the crowd shouted back, "No!"

"I don't know," Trump said. "Honestly, we don't know. Who the hell knows." Cruz was Trump's No. 1 target during the 65-minute event, revealing just how much of a threat the Republican senator from Texas has become to the front-runner. Before the rally started, Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." blared, a new edition to Trump's playlist.

"So, Cruz is a problem," Trump said, beginning an attack that lasted about seven minutes. "And here's the problem: It's called uncertainly. It's called you just don't know."

Cruz has repeatedly said there is no question that he is eligible for the presidency, saying this weekend that "the Constitution and federal law are clear that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural-born citizen." Cruz's campaign has yet to respond to Trump's latest comments.

But Trump said Sunday that "this is not a settled matter" and that he's not the only one raising questions. He said if Cruz becomes the Republican nominee, the Democrats could challenge his eligibility in lawsuits that could drag on for years.

"Does anyone know more about litigation than Trump?" Trump said of himself. "Okay? I know a lot. I'm like a PhD in litigation."

Trump compared Cruz running for president with this lingering question about Democrat Hillary Clinton running despite lingering questions about her use of a private email account during her time as secretary of state. Later Trump also compared the situation to a fighter being disqualified for not meeting the weight class.

I’m proud to defend and promulgate. I thought America could have found a better natural born citizen than Obama . . and I think the same of Ted. As a matter of fact, I thought it BEFORE Trump ever FINALLY brought it up himself. And I think any Republican who can’t admit that it is very closely similar to Obama is just fooling him-herself. Lots of hypocrites on this topic . . as I heard multitudes of Freepers despising Obama’s birthright situation.

Difference here is that Trump’s being an arsehole wouldn’t be anything that could be adjudicated in a court or have legal consequences. He’s (at worse) just an arsehole and the constitution proffers no opinion on arseholes.

Well want did you expect Trump is a big Dem donor, supported Carter, Clinton, Hillary in 2008, just gave a bid wad of cash to VA Dem Gun Grabber governor while running for GOP president. Just these facts turn me off of him.

Clintonista Trump thanks you for yours...

Well, go lie down and be still so you don’t have to take any more medicine. :)

Seriously...if Trump supporters had vetted the guy, they would know what a lot of us know about him. This is the real Trump...it always has been. He’s always been a progressive and a sleaze.

It is not an attack from the left to warn of a problem from the left that isn’t going to go away.

Sorry, but the birther ship sailed with Obama.

Donald would be smart to drop this. It isn’t getting him any traction and it’s getting sympathy for Cruz.

Trump is not offering Ted the VP role. He's finishing him off for the nomination.

In a way, I kind of see the way Ted Cruz has been set up by the PTBs as being very similar to the technique and bait used against Sarah Palin.

In both cases, the same result in mind: rising young and threatening, populist conservative stars being shot down in mid-trajectory.

Palin is done and out of the game.

Now it looks like it's Ted's turn.

Why is he still donating to Dems while running for the GOP Presidential ticket, and the MSM is silent on the fact. Google digs it up easy.

This is a serious constitutional question, and now is the time to bring it up.

It's nonsense, and became moot with Obama anyway.

After all the mud is hosed off, we still have an issue we know the Democrats aren’t going to be anywhere near as kind about as the GOP was.

The Democrats would auction their own mothers into slavery to gain some immediate point. The GOP, and a lot of FReepers, don’t grok this.

Like the bible says, faithful are the wounds of a friend.

I personally think Cruz could do a lot more good in the Senate than in the White House when the battle royal about the future USSC arises. Smears on Trump’s past notwithstanding, he listens to good advice on matters political.

Trump attacking Cruz from the left. Disgusting.

He's done it before. Remember his attack on Cruz for not being able to make deals? This is the very same attack the Establishment progressives mount on Cruz.

Just another politician, pandering to political correctness.

Good ole Donald — his claims that he only “hits back” only lasted until he got behind in the polls. Now, he is flailing at Cruz with anything he can, lol.

I had been not seriously considering Trump for VP at one point but definately never POTUS. I don’t even think I’d want him for that now that he’s making clear he’s more Democrat than Republican...oh and the Clinton donations and praise of Hillary are just too much. These attacks and distractions now are just scummy, do nothing to help Republicans and everything to help Hillary...Trump needs to take his flapping lips back to his unserious, reality clown show life.

His “act” has worn thin on me. And it will with others as time goes on and people become more aware of what a BUFFOON he is. And his “schtick” will wear thin and grate on most of the Trumpadoors (or at least those who are not COMPLETELY AND IRRETRIEVABLY COCOONED IN THE CULT OF PERSONALITY) as he exposes himself more.

As recently as 2013 Trump praised gun-grabber Michael Bloomberg as "Brilliant" for using his wealth to try and take our guns.

If you were interested in anything other than nursing personal grudges, you would have read enough to understand that I was responding to a person who said he hoped Trump would be another Reagan.

But no, not you. You exist to leap on certain screen names like a duck on a June bug regardless of how foolish you might end up looking.
