Donald Trump asks a Reno audience to weigh in on Ted Cruz’s eligibility
Washington Post ^ | 1/10/16 | Jenna Johnson

RENO, Nev. -- After days of coyly raising questions about Ted Cruz's eligibility to be president, given that he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, Donald Trump let his audience weigh in at a rally Sunday afternoon.

"Is he a natural-born citizen?" the Republican White House hopeful asked several thousand gathered in a Reno ballroom. Members of the crowd shouted back, "No!"

"I don't know," Trump said. "Honestly, we don't know. Who the hell knows." Cruz was Trump's No. 1 target during the 65-minute event, revealing just how much of a threat the Republican senator from Texas has become to the front-runner. Before the rally started, Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." blared, a new edition to Trump's playlist.

"So, Cruz is a problem," Trump said, beginning an attack that lasted about seven minutes. "And here's the problem: It's called uncertainly. It's called you just don't know."

Cruz has repeatedly said there is no question that he is eligible for the presidency, saying this weekend that "the Constitution and federal law are clear that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural-born citizen." Cruz's campaign has yet to respond to Trump's latest comments.

But Trump said Sunday that "this is not a settled matter" and that he's not the only one raising questions. He said if Cruz becomes the Republican nominee, the Democrats could challenge his eligibility in lawsuits that could drag on for years.

"Does anyone know more about litigation than Trump?" Trump said of himself. "Okay? I know a lot. I'm like a PhD in litigation."

Trump compared Cruz running for president with this lingering question about Democrat Hillary Clinton running despite lingering questions about her use of a private email account during her time as secretary of state. Later Trump also compared the situation to a fighter being disqualified for not meeting the weight class.

Trump attacking Cruz from the left. Disgusting.

From the Left? How many of us wanted strong actin on Obama????

Funny how we see what we want to see and ignore what we find inconvenient.

We know the Left will raise a ruckus over any wedge they can and if it happens after Cruz is our nominee, it will cause many to ponder whether he will actually make it to the WH if elected.

Cruz has opportunity to show how savvy he is by putting this to bed early on so it can't be an issue down the road.

I believe he's eligible - too many have doubts.

Time for folks to step up and solidify their support one way or another...

Now for a short public service announcement to all on FR:
We need to ensure we don't get another Obama-like America Hater as the next President.
The best way to ensure that is to actively support a candidate as the next President.
I donate to the candidate I support and you should too, else, your "support" really doesn't have any meaning.

It's even worse if you use FR and don't donate. If you are one of those who feel it's OK to use FR daily w/o helping pay to keep the lights on, then please don't complain about the welfare leeches because, functionally, you are no different than any other who enjoys the fruits of others' work for your own benefit. Also, don't be surprised if others decide that your opinions are as worthless as your non-donations - hypocrites aren't worth listening to.

PS - If you are one of those unlucky few who cannot afford even a small donation to FR or a candidate, God Bless and happy FReeping!.....

Donate to FR

The question is: Where is the case by the highest court that says it will go nowhere? Unless you can find one where nobody else has been able to you are wrong. BTW, a statute does not amend nor define the Constitution with regard to the question, particularly one that was amended, (precisely, according to comments at the time, because it unconstitutionally attempted to do so,) so as to eliminate the word “natural.” I suspect that you have not studied the actual law involved and have limited capacity to do so or you would not make such a pronouncement that cannot be backed up.
I'll bet you a Powerball ticket that this goes nowhere... Will that do for you?

I would agree, but for so-called “experts” who wield far more authority than me, even absent a definitive so-called Supreme Court ruling.

Just a few months ago, Trump said there was no issue with Cruz’s citizenship. Now he’s blowing it all out of proportion. He would sell his own mother down the river to score political points, just like all his fellow Democrats.

“I don’t know if he’s been lying about Ted Cruz or not, haven’t heard what you’ve heard him say.” GBA

“From what I understand everything is fine. I hear that it [Cruz’s eligibility] was checked out by every attorney, in every which way, and I understand that Ted is in fine shape.”

Trump’s recent behavior is a serious disappointment that makes me sad.

Trump is not attacking Cruz.
He is just saying that Cruz’s constitutional eligibility (i.e Cruz’s nbc status) is an ‘uncertainlty’, is something that ‘we just don’t know’. Isn’t it better to clear the uncertainty now than to let it become a huge fight (court battles?) later should Cruz becomes the nominee? (You bet the democRATS will sue Cruz over this!)

Any objective person will agree that, at best, Cruz’s nbc status is not settled.
Any sane person will agree that it is better to settle it now than later when/if Cruz is the nominee.

It is not a matter of taking Cruz’s side or Trump’s side.

The Americans just need to settle the uncertainty!

“He is truly a child how he has pursued this line of attack. Now I am seriously reconsidering whether I will even vote for Trumpy in the general.”

Trump does seem to have a childlike inability to tolerate frustration, and a lack of moral scruples.

But he has much better political ideas than Mrs Clinton, who also has her own serious character problems, so I would vote for him anyway in November, if it comes to that.

He is not just child like in his attacks but his sentence structure and vocabulary has to be on the 4th or 5th grade level as well has his constant repetitiveness. “I’m really, really rich and I will send them all back to Mexico. Did I say I was really, really rich? Well, I am worth 10 billion and I am really, really rich but I am going to send them all back to Mexico!”

Well the Cruzbots aren’t lying about Trump’s positions like the Trumpbots are about Cruz’s policy positions.

I see your point.

However, just reading his words at face value, I also read and hear a lot of people, lawyers and otherwise, who are saying things that would give Trump that impression and thus make his words true as stated.

I'm okay with that. Not a lie to me, but I see your point.

If he had added "from what people are saying" after every "I understand", then there is not even an appearance of impropriety. He is obviously stating an absolute truth.

People are saying that and a few of them have conservative cred.

Catherine ?

It’s ironic and strange that the TRUMP supporters deny the fact that they are only running purely on emotions, but yet ?
They sing praises and keep reminding us that the people are angry, isn’t anger a “ Emotion “ ?

They are more like running on empty, no soild foundation.

Emotions are like sinking sand.

Emotions can be manipulated.

Emotions can be deceiving.

Regardless in how much they deny it , they are running purely on emotions, not facts.

Liberalism has no logic, just wild unchecked emotions.

Yes indeed, where was their * Birthism * when they were singing praises that Ted Cruz should be VP for TRUMP ?

Ted Cruz would then be a heart beat from the presidency.

But Ted’s eligibility didn’t become a factor, issue until polls started to show Ted Cruz beating Trump in some places.

My how the masks are coming off.

To all Trump supporters :

Catherine ?

Here is a really big eye opener that will expose the Trump supporters for what they really are.

The masks are finally coming off.

Up and until this issue grew to the size it is now currently, for months the Trump supporters were singing and praising the virtues of Ted Cruz being Donald Trump’s VP choice, am I correct ?

( Chime in Trump supporters, is that correct ? You guys had NO problem with Ted Cruz being Trump’s VP choice then, and his eligibility wasn’t a problem for you guys wanting him to be Trump’s VP. )

However ?

Suppose Trump does get the nomination AND picks Ted Cruz as his running mate for VP ?

Am I still correct on this ?

Consider this ?

Think really really hard on this.

Ted Cruz will be by default a heart beat away from the Presidency, correct ?

So then ?

Why is Ted Cruz’s eligibility NOT A problem if Ted Cruz is Donald Trump’s VP ?

But Yet ?

Ted Cruz’s eligibility IS A problem if he becomes the GOP nominee ?

Some here even said that Donald Trump should be president for 8 years and then it’s Ted Cruz’s turn as President for another 8 years.

IF Ted Cruz’s eligibility IS a problem now ?

Why isn’t it a problem in another 8 years after Trump serves 8 years ?

I know, I know, it makes to much sense for you guys.

I know, I know, you guys got to think really really hard on that one getting through the fog of emotionalism.

To much logic for you guys, I apologize if this makes to much sense for you guys.

What this does is exposes you guys for the phonies you guys really are, the masks are truely coming off.

Why is Ted Cruz’s eligibility to run for President a problem now ?

When for the last few months the Trump supporters did not have a problem with it at all for Ted Cruz to be Donald Trump’s VP ?

Or ?

Some Trump supporters have NO problem with Ted Cruz being the President AFTER Trump has served 4 or 8 years as President.

So why is it such a problem now and not before ? Or after TRUMP has served 4 or 8 years as President and then it’s Ted Cruz’s turn to be president.

Pretlez Logic.

So now, Ted Cruz’s eligibility IS a problem now since he might be able to win it all.

Can’t have it both ways, either he is eligible, to be his VP then president, or he is not.

Quite simply, the truth isn’t in any of them. If you go back and take a look at threads from 2013-14, you can find any number of them gushing over Cruz, saying they can’t wait to work for his campaign, raise money for him, etc.

Just as you can find them on 2011 Trump threads, trashing him for a disgusting adulterer, a corrupt bribe-payer, a liberal, and even worse than Obama.

They’ll say anything to keep from having to live life without their precious Donnie, and if it means becoming nutcase birthers, they’ll do it. If it means lying about Cruz even to the point of calling him a member of the Muslim brotherhood—yes, I saw it last night-—they’ll do it.

Becoming liberals in order to support a liberal never turns out well.

A dual Citizen is a dual Citizen. A Canadian is a Canadian and an American is an American. We had people here calling him a Canadian. That precludes him being an American. Words mean things. If they don’t know the difference they shouldn’t be spreading crap.

One must wonder when and how will their denial of the facts of Trump being a Democrat and a flagrant fraud end?

Even if Trump becomes President and is advancing the Democrat agenda at breakneck speed because he is “The Greatest President Ever who can get things done” (all Democrat things)... they will still make cheap excuses for him no matter how outlandish and absurd.

Obviously this would stand out in your mind as it would have been going on when you were new to FR. Do you happen to have any threads you could link to? I don’t remember these threads and don’t have very good responses with the search function here.
