RENO, Nev. -- After days of coyly raising questions about Ted Cruz's eligibility to be president, given that he was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father, Donald Trump let his audience weigh in at a rally Sunday afternoon.
"Is he a natural-born citizen?" the Republican White House hopeful asked several thousand gathered in a Reno ballroom. Members of the crowd shouted back, "No!"
"I don't know," Trump said. "Honestly, we don't know. Who the hell knows." Cruz was Trump's No. 1 target during the 65-minute event, revealing just how much of a threat the Republican senator from Texas has become to the front-runner. Before the rally started, Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." blared, a new edition to Trump's playlist.
"So, Cruz is a problem," Trump said, beginning an attack that lasted about seven minutes. "And here's the problem: It's called uncertainly. It's called you just don't know."
Cruz has repeatedly said there is no question that he is eligible for the presidency, saying this weekend that "the Constitution and federal law are clear that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural-born citizen." Cruz's campaign has yet to respond to Trump's latest comments.
But Trump said Sunday that "this is not a settled matter" and that he's not the only one raising questions. He said if Cruz becomes the Republican nominee, the Democrats could challenge his eligibility in lawsuits that could drag on for years.
"Does anyone know more about litigation than Trump?" Trump said of himself. "Okay? I know a lot. I'm like a PhD in litigation."
Trump compared Cruz running for president with this lingering question about Democrat Hillary Clinton running despite lingering questions about her use of a private email account during her time as secretary of state. Later Trump also compared the situation to a fighter being disqualified for not meeting the weight class.
And all these rags mean what before a kangaroo court?
Great question, lewislynn. Cruz should have seen this coming long before mere months ago. Even his own Harvard Professor Lawrence Tribe says the legal standing for ‘natural born citizen’ has never been fully settled. Cruz should have known to dump that Canadian passport and citizenship before trying to convince America that he’s committed only to the USA.
I agree with what you have written. Trump is alienating true conservatives and he cannot win without them. His game makes no sense unless his ultimate goal is to divide the GOP so his buddies, the Clintons, have the red carpet laid out for them.
I mean yes, there is a case to be made for a loose view, that Vattel’s Law Of Nations shouldn’t be the last say here but a venerable act of Congress (together with more recent developments as applicable) should.
And we could say that the grudging acceptance of Barack has made it harder to object to a Cruz.
But in any case some principle has been sacrificed. The only real way out of this is a popular return to the One above men’s principles, that is, the Lord. Otherwise this is a recipe for more and more and more aimless thrashing around as nothing in the law has any anchor point.

Even if this all ends in Cruz's favor it will never be over. Just like with Obama, there will always be doubt.
Ted Cruz will never be elected President. The Democrats will never be shouted down like Republicans were.
Palin bowed out for one simple reason. The lack of strength and character of her base.
I fought the PDS wars. I watched her so called supporters go fully liberal and attack her personally, attack her kids and throw her aside for the staunch conservative, Mitt Romney and a host of RINOs before the primary even came close to beginning. So don’t tell me about anyone’s ‘strength of character’.
The GOP can be divided only if it wants to be divided.
Just saying though, Norm, the strength of some characters is like unto that of the strength of the stench of a skunk.
The GOP is politer than the Democrats. Those who claim there isn’t a dime’s difference is right. It’s more like several million dollars’ worth.
Do you not expect Democrats to target that or anything else they could?
Is it not true what Trump said, if Cruz became the Republican nominee the Democrats could challenge his eligibility in lawsuits that could drag on for years? I am not a legal scholar but this seems possible from what I understand. If true I would think the possibility of it causing chaos is real.
That’s not the only good strategic use for a Cruz in a Trump administration. He could be stellar right in the Senate where he is now.
So someone who invokes the Name of the Almighty (nicely done, BTW) would consider supporting a sleaze like Trump? He is an uprepentant man with little or no moral compass. Along with starting and running casinos he ran male and female strip clubs. He is like a sleazy used car salesman.
There are courageous men and women out there. Men and women of principle. Trump is not one of them. He is the anti-conservative.
I suppose this could be a powerful delusion, where even the elect are deceived...
I happen to actually mean it, and I know God means it when He means grace.

I bet you never really looked at the model Trump has proffered either... the negotiation with the people model. HE NEVER OFFERED TO BE “A CONSERVATIVE.”
Somehow this was supposed to be a wonderful idea in the Contract With America of old.
But now, because Trump did not originally hail from the GOP, it is getting hooted at.

Since I vote for conservatives and stand on principle I personally don’t have that problem. On the other hand, if I were regularly defending my vote for a hard leftist that profits from BBQing the dismembered remains of babies his own laws helped kill, nearly four years after the fact, then yea. I’d have an awful stench indeed.
I mean you gotta be one VERY, V E R Y sick pup to trade babies lives for a political win and try defending at after those ‘bemusing’ Planned Parenthood videos. Certainly no Christian. And I’m fairly certain the founders would agree, what with that ‘life’ thing they were so big on.
