Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said Sunday he will win the presidency by “painting in bold colors, not pale pastels,” and that his passion for repealing Obamacare, establishing a flat tax and enforcing immigration law will be a contrast to the “mushy middle” that doomed GOP nominees in 1996, 2000 and 2012.
“What they did didn’t work,” Mr. Cruz told CNN’s State of the Union.
Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, is leading in Iowa ahead of the Feb. 1 caucuses, even edging businessman Donald Trump by several points in recent polls despite the mogul’s big leads elsewhere and nationally.
The Texan said his appeal is based on his loyalty to conservative principles and the rule of law. He said voters are fed up with GOP leaders who have funded the Democratic agenda through recent spending bills and that Democrats have allowed President Obama to circumvent the law through executive action.
He said he would work with Congress to achieve his legislative agenda, including repeal of Obamacare. That means he can’t literally repeal the overhaul on “day one,” though he is making it his top priority.
“I intend to follow the law,” Mr. Cruz said.
He said the law is also clear on illegal immigration — it is illegal — and that he would deport unlawful residents through regular law enforcement channels and e-verify, a system that allows businesses to determine if their employers are eligible to work in the U.S.
He said his plan does not include Mr. Trump’s call to go “door to door” to root out illegal immigrants for deportation.
“We don’t live in a police state,” he said.

I support said about not rounding up law breakers unless it is in
the course of some other offense.
That is exactly what we have now.
So, Cruz does not want to deport 11 million.
Do you also support 11 million law breakers staying here?
Do you also support 11 million law breakers staying here too?
You know that the immigration law isn’t being enforced. Let’s stop being silly. One might doubt whether Cruz or Trump really means what he says, which would be reasonable. Nevertheless, there is more than one way to get rid of the illegals, but each and every way requires being serious.
You seem to have forgotten how quickly the illegal population of Arizona shrank when they passed the Arizona Immigration Law in 2010. An estimated one-third of the illegal population exited the state in the first month after its passage.
If Cruz is elected, the illegal exodus will begin on Election Day and I'd estimate over three-quarters will be gone by the end of his first term -- by forcible deportation and, more likely, self-deportation.
I don’t pretend to know what is in the AZ law.
Except I’m glad to hear it’s working.
I have no doubt it can be done, if there is the will to do it.
They are criminals Ted!
Ted’s colors are becoming apparent once again, green and yellow. Big donor cheap labor greenbacks and moderate progressive yellow. I can’t defend Cruz on this leftward move.
Agreed!
Where do you get your information about Cruz’s immigration plan? Because it’s 180 degrees wrong.
Kick all Muslims out of America before they recruit ALL of the negroes.
Or someone in donor called his wife...oh wait she works for the donor class already...hummmmm!
It worked.
Until the Obama administration went to court and found a judge to issue an injunction...
Re:”How does Cruz plan to deport the few million illegals who are here that WE DON’T EVEN KNOW ARE HERE?
He has NO plan for that. Trump DOES. ‘Stings’ are a MUST! “
Yep he will round ‘em up and send ‘em back.
But wait, he said he would bring ‘em back in afterwardð³
Wait a second here.
I thought he was gonna get rid of ‘em fer good.
Dang that trump feller is just too smart fer me I guess.
But I guess I trust him anyway cuz he’s a billionaire ‘n’ stuff.
Yep that trump he’s sumpin’ else.
Back to reality.....
That is the mentality of your average trumphole.
Pathetic.
Cruz also distinguished himself from Dewhurst with his full-throated support for a border wall estimated by the Department of Homeland Security to cost $7.3 billion, or $6.5 million per mile. Cruz defended the border wall proposal even if it meant expropriating private property-a position that the debate's moderators, WFAA reporter Brad Watson and Gromer Jeffers of the Dallas Morning News, said contrasted with Cruz's message of fiscal conservatism. "One of the specific powers and responsibilities of the federal government is to secure the borders," Cruz said. "Property can be taken with due process of law and just compensation.".
If they can't get jobs...and they can't collect welfare...they're going back home even if we didn't actually know they were here.
Where did Trump ever say he would go door to door arresting illegals? Sounds like Cruz is exaggerating Trumps reasonable position.
And even if Trump did, I don’t care.
Why is Cruz worried about the methods used to get the invaders out of here.
Cruz weaseling on this tell me he thinks the invaders have legitimate expectations of how they can demand we act.
All other amnesty BS follows from that.
“show a small minority want raids conducted that would separate families”
Their families are free to go back with them. The choice to separate is theirs. And THEY chose to commit the crime. Likewise, we are not “separating families” when we send bank robbers to prison.
