Donald Trump and Eminent Domain
National Review Online ^ | April 19, 2011 | Robert VerBruggen

A brief history

In a free market, there's a pretty simple process for dealing with the situation that arises when one person covets another's belongings: The coveter makes an offer to purchase them. If the offer is rebuffed, the coveter can make a new proposal, but he cannot simply take what he wants. It's an effective way of recognizing the impracticality of the Tenth Commandment while enforcing the Eighth. Donald Trump's covetous nature is not in dispute, but what many may forget is that he's no great respecter of the admonition not to steal, either: The man has a track record of using the government as a hired thug to take other people's property. This is called, of course, "eminent domain." The Constitution's Fifth Amendment allows the government to take private property for "public use," so long as "just compensation" is paid. In the infamous 2005 Kelo decision, the Supreme Court held that "public use" could include, well, private use, so long as the new property owner paid more in taxes than the previous one. In other words, it allowed developers and the government to gang up on homeowners. The developer gets more land, the government gets more tax money. The only losers are the original owner and his property rights. A decade and a half ago, it was fresh on everyone's mind that Donald Trump is one of the leading users of this form of state-sanctioned thievery.

[NOTE: THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES SOME EXAMPLES OF TRUMP & EMINENT DOMAIN]

...Trump was delighted to find that the Supreme Court had okayed the brand of government-abetted theft that he'd twice attempted. "I happen to agree with it 100 percent," he told... Neil Cavuto of the Kelo decision. Can Republicans support someone with so little regard for... property of others? Let's hope not.

Now, now FRiend, don’t spoil the Trump-hating crowd’s fun by throwing the truth at them, that’s most unkind. ;)

Oh yeah...now I see...you are one of the panicked anti-Cruz jihadists. I guess eventually you’ll tire of grasping at straws and engage in discussions of real issues. I’ll leave you to your fellow anti-Cruz jihadists on this holy day.

I remember how much anger their was after Kelo. In fact, there was a caustic movement to take Justice Souter’s house under E.D. for “economic” development. I am sure that many Trump supporter abhor Kelo but seem all to willing to pass on Trump’s position.

Funny you should mention Rick Nelson, I always found it darkly ominous that at his last show before he died on New Year’s Eve 1985, he closed out with the same song that Buddy Holly did in his last show in 1959, ‘Rave On’, and went on to die in a plane crash just like Buddy did.

And then, there was Waylon Jennings, (part of Buddy Holly’s band) who told the story of how Buddy had chartered that plane to maybe gain a little time to get over a cold that had been bothering him, and Waylon had given his seat to J.P. Richardson (the Big Bopper), and Buddy was kidding him about it before he took off, saying “well Waylon, I hope you freeze in that damn ol’ bus!” (laughing) and Waylon retorted “yeah, and I hope your damn plane crashes.”

Waylon said it took years to even try and come to grips with what he had said in jest, not knowing that he was forecasting the immediate future.

And you Trump-haters would gnaw off the arm of your own mothers to beat Donald Trump over the head with it.

Your hatred needs professional help. Get some.

My pleasure FRiend. I have often imagined a world in which the Duke never got cancer, and he and Ronald Reagan ended up as the GOP ticket in 1976, and how much different things would have been. :)

Eminent Domain is the law of the land, bought and paid for by politicians and their pacs. Politicians are the ones who decide when to allow eminent domain and when to deny it to real estate developers. ($$$$). NO ONE is challenging this injustice, including Trump.

On the other hand, NO ONE challenged political correctness, illegal immigration nor flooding the nation with jihadists before Trump, either.

It's amazing how the Trumpettes can't even admit their man could possibly wrong on even one issue. Emminent domain for private profit is evil and shows the Donald's feelings about government power, but that doesn't matter to them. I don't remember one Freeper defending the Kelo decision when it came out, but now it's Okay because he says it is.

And for all those saying it's okay because Trump offered more money than the properties worth, well not everything comes down to money.

Is it a joke? In his TV commercial Trump claims he's going to cut the head off ISIS and take their oil. How does he do that without taking the land it's under? Meaning invade and occupy?

You Trump fanatics need to listen you your guy more.

This is something that has long been the biggest bone of contention I have against Trump.
