MASON CITY, Iowa–Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz wants to add a number of amendments to the U.S. Constitution. He told reporters Friday at the Praise Community Church he would like to see amendments added pertaining to a balanced budget, term limits, and restoring power to state legislatures.
“We need quite quite a few constitutional amendments,”Cruz said. "I will fight hard for a balanced budget amendment including also a term limits amendment. I think a term limits amendment is absolutely critical. If you look at the abuses of power we're seeing in Washington-term limits for members of Congress and the Supreme court."
He added, "Beyond that, I've introduced a Constitutional amendment restoring state legislators to define marriage as one man and one woman. And there are many more amendments we need, in part because the federal government and the courts have gotten so far away from the original text and our original understanding of the Constitution."
Cruz first wrote about amending the Constitution back in July when the Supreme Court ruled for same sex marriage to be recognized in each state.
The Texas senator’s remarks come as Texas Governor Greg Abbot called for a Constitutional Convention to take back states rights.
"If we are going to fight for, protect and hand on to the next generation, the freedom that [President] Reagan spoke of ... then we have to take the lead to restore the rule of law in America," Abbott said during a speech at the Texas Public Policy Foundation's Policy Orientation.
The Dallas Morning News reports Abbot will ask lawmakers to pass a bill allowing Texas to join other states calling for a Convention of States.
The Convention of States (COS) Project is organized in each states with almost one million volunteers, supporters and advocates, their website says. Alaska, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama passed the organization’s Article V resolution, which proposes amendments to the U.S. Constitution on issues pertaining to limiting the power of the federal government and establishing term limits for federal officials, since the project launched in 2013. In 2015, the COS Project filed their resolutions in 37 states.
100% agreement from me and I’ve been here 13 years and seen it again and again.
Among the things that irritate me this time around. 6 months ago FReepers would have cheered the citizens united ruling. Now the mere mention of a PAC turns the same people into slobbering Harry Reid clones mumbling about the Koch bros.
I just don’t understand why Cruz supporters can’t be patient. Four years of President Trump, a force of nature who knows how to frame the narrative, can get things going. Then, after Cruz does some positive stuff in the US Senate, working with Sessions to clean up the mess, he can run. He’ll still be young.
Define what comprises a religion in 1st Amend. Certainly a military agenda of spreading a “faith” by subjugating women, breeding them, and deeming suicide bombs and killing non believers to be an acceptable part of their “religion” all in an effort to create a caliphate, a nation by any other name, as a religion is idiotic! It is a cult. It is a military invasion method.
At a minimum prohibit, by amendment, the imposition and / or practice of Sharia Law.
Are you aware that the reason the 17th amendment was passed in the first place was because everyone was so upset at the corruption due to senators being appointed by the state legislatures?
Did it stop the corruption?
Never do things progressives want, they always make things worse.
I ask the same question I have asked before. To people in general. How does this behavior not make these people liberals?
Liberals turn on dimes. Liberals fight against those who are conservative. Liberals slime conservatives. A horse is a horse, of course, of course.
Trump I don’t think is a fully raging liberal. He has some conservative points. Not enough though. But a number of his supporters trashing a conservative in an effort to divert is a purely liberal action.
Ted isn’t Jesus and has made mistakes. But he’s by far the most conservative of the two in a side by side comparison.
If we want conservatism, we will vote for the most conservative. If we don’t, we won’t. Barbie needs to learn that math isn’t hard.
Cruz is the most conservative of any of the candidates running today.
Cruz is the polar opposite of Obama. Obama is an extreme left wing ideologue and Cruz, while not extreme, is a conservative ideologue.
Though, I’m sure you will call me squishy middle or all kinds of names, I am tired of ideologues of every stripe.
I have wanted a businessman to run for years. Someone who has actually accomplished something. Someone who has lived in the real world. Someone who has had to be creative in solving problems. Someone who has had to make and meet budgets. Someone who has signed checks on the front. Someone who has other people depending on him for their livelihoods. Someone who knows how to delegate and lead. Someone who talks to people without prepared speeches. Someone who sees a problem, finds a way to solve the problem, finds the people who can do the work, and then leads those people in accomplishing the plan.
Who knew that someone would turn out to be Donald Trump. But it has turned out to be Donald Trump and nothing you or anyone else can say will sway me from supporting him.
Thanks for the input.
I don’t see why we should always find excuses to not elect the most conservative man running in any given election. It’s always ‘keep our powder dry.”
Nope. Not this time.
You want conservatism or you don’t. If you do, you’ll vote for it.
Yes, he can hire qualified people. Anyone can.
The question is, what is his criteria for selecting experts? And what does he want these people to do?
IOW, I need to hear from his own mouth what his fundamental principles are and how he would apply them to "Making America Great Again."
I'm too old for slogans.
“He needs to show us a little more.”
He has shown us enough that Cruz is following his lead, to a certain extent. Cruz has finally came around and at least to say he “intends” to deport illegals. But he can’t muster up the courage to say that all Muslims should be banned until the mess is cleared up. I predict that he will later on, when he finds out clearly that that is what the American people really, really want.
Now, Trump has put out positions galore, if you are interested, rather than just to throw out snot.
I didn’t know Alan Keyes stole my idea! LOL, actually, I’m surprised I didn’t know that since I like most of his positions on issues.
Remember back 16 years? We were promised GWB was a conservative. My point? I'm not convinced Cruz is any less a globalist that GWB proved to be.
Someone who hired 150 illegal immigrant construction workers and treated them like dirt.
Someone who runs a phoney baloney "charitable" foundation.
You need to look beyond his PR.
Term limits will be a tough sell. The crowned heads in the federal government will want none of that.
Pure crap. Cruz is one man fighting the leftists that lesser evil fools ran to the booth to elect. And now you are upset he did nothing? What was he to do but try? Liberal republican voters sent in a leftist army to oppose his conservative positions and actions.
Trump is Trump. He will have no more success against the united GOPDNC that leftist voters empowered. And saying hes this or that is meaningless.
Regardless of which man wins, people are going to be disappointed in what their going to get. Not because they won’t try. Because ‘WE’ created an opposition in congress they will be damn hard pressed to overcome. See my post above.
“...and reinstate RAPE as a capital crime...”
Would false accusation of rape also be a capital crime? I can see that level of punishment leading to notarized signed declarations prior to dating - which would render the law as a profit center for lawyers.
We should be careful what we ask for.
You want conservatism or you don’t. If you do, you’ll vote for it.

Conservatism is something that needs to grow from the bottom up. Not the top down. You cannot force people to accept it anymore than you can force people to accept liberalism.
Conservatism is not a religion to me. It is a way of life and the way I have run my household and raised my children. It is something I try to pass to my grandchildren, my friends, and my neighbors by what I do and how I treat them.
I am a conservative because of what I believe in. I don’t let conservatism determine what I believe in.
