MASON CITY, Iowa–Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz wants to add a number of amendments to the U.S. Constitution. He told reporters Friday at the Praise Community Church he would like to see amendments added pertaining to a balanced budget, term limits, and restoring power to state legislatures.
“We need quite quite a few constitutional amendments,”Cruz said. "I will fight hard for a balanced budget amendment including also a term limits amendment. I think a term limits amendment is absolutely critical. If you look at the abuses of power we're seeing in Washington-term limits for members of Congress and the Supreme court."
He added, "Beyond that, I've introduced a Constitutional amendment restoring state legislators to define marriage as one man and one woman. And there are many more amendments we need, in part because the federal government and the courts have gotten so far away from the original text and our original understanding of the Constitution."
Cruz first wrote about amending the Constitution back in July when the Supreme Court ruled for same sex marriage to be recognized in each state.
The Texas senator’s remarks come as Texas Governor Greg Abbot called for a Constitutional Convention to take back states rights.
"If we are going to fight for, protect and hand on to the next generation, the freedom that [President] Reagan spoke of ... then we have to take the lead to restore the rule of law in America," Abbott said during a speech at the Texas Public Policy Foundation's Policy Orientation.
The Dallas Morning News reports Abbot will ask lawmakers to pass a bill allowing Texas to join other states calling for a Convention of States.
The Convention of States (COS) Project is organized in each states with almost one million volunteers, supporters and advocates, their website says. Alaska, Florida, Georgia, and Alabama passed the organization’s Article V resolution, which proposes amendments to the U.S. Constitution on issues pertaining to limiting the power of the federal government and establishing term limits for federal officials, since the project launched in 2013. In 2015, the COS Project filed their resolutions in 37 states.
It hasn’t. More amendments are not the answer.
So rather just casting your opinion as fact, let’s have the national debate to decide what’s right.
You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. Cloture votes ARE roll call votes and they are recorded. See how that works? Cruz vote Yea for cloture on the Senate version of TPA. Cloture needs 60 votes to pass, Ted was the 54th or 56th vote. McConnell made a deal with Dems to get the last few votes he needed. The bill then went to conference committee because the House version was vastly different than the Senate version. Instead of re-writing the Senate version, the conference committee amended and re-wrote the House version. Two different bills with two different names.
THAT version then went back to the Senate for a vote. When cloture was voted upon Cruz voted no. When the bill’s final vote was held Ted voted no.
2 different bills for TPA. Try reading them sometime.
I am not at all deceived, but then I understand how our legislature works.
It's all smoke and mirrors after committee to cover the butts of folks like Cruz. If Cruz wanted to protect American jobs he never would have voted for it in the first form. It doesn't matter what they end up calling some variation, or what little they tweak (like the China issue), Cruz's first vote guaranteed Obamatrade. Voting against the final version was to cover his keester.

It was Thomas Jefferson who said, “Impeachment is a farce and will not be tried again.”
It’s been tried a couple of times since his day, but it is still a farce. Because of its nuclear nature, it is a fairly weak threat. I really don’t much blame the Republican Congress for avoiding it like the plague. It doesn’t work, it’s an empty threat. If the minority party stays firm and unified, it’s inherent weaknesses likely cannot be overcome.
I mean, heck, in 1998, clinton was guilty as sin of a felony. But the dammocraps couldn’t be moved.
Having a discussion with you is pointless. You have been presented with facts and refuse to even try to understand how the legislature works.
You will not admit how it works. The only way to stop a bill is not to let any version come to the floor in the first place. That is a fact. If you understand government you would know that is a fact. Cruz supported fast track in his first vote by letting it come to the floor. The second vote is cover. Period.
There needs to be a wholesale change in the rules of evidence. Rape was historically a capital crime. It needs to be reinstated.

Virtually every state legislature is as compromised as our Congress.
We cannot trust them to open up such a Pandora’s box and collaborate with bad influences like US democrat-socialists, Soros, the UN, the media, academia, financiers.

In all of my voting life, I have always voted against a issue calling for an amendment to the constitution of whatever state I am living in at the time.
The men who wrote those constitutions wrote them for a reason, if you don’t like what it says, move to another state.
I feel the same way about this country’s constitution. If you don’t like what it says, leave.

Oh for the love of God, cloture isn’t about allowing a bill to come to the floor. Cloture ends debate. I can’t tell you how many times Senators vote no on cloture but yes on the bill. They support the bill but want more time for debate. Voting yes on cloture does usually mean that the Senator in question supports the bill, but not always.
In this case, Cruz clearly supported the bill he voted to end debate on. That bill was not the bill brought back for another vote. Cruz has explained why he voted yes then no. If you choose not to believe him that is on you.
I know exactly how the US Senate works. I know what happened. Again, choose to remain ignorant if you wish. Just be kind enough not to inflict your ignorance on the rest of us.

You need 3/4 state approval to ‘screw’ with an amendment. In the meantime, what exactly are the federal courts doing with the Constitution? And how are professors training them?

Well, all I’m saying is that it is no longer unheard of for cases of “rape” and “date rape” to be exposed as something like “buyer’s remorse”, breakup revenge, and attempts at extortion for love, infatuation or money (Duke Lacrosse?). If we are going to set Rape as an executable offense, then the very act of falsely accusing someone of rape should be considered akin to — at the *VERY* least — attempted homicide, correct? And should an accused rapist be convicted and executed and later exonerated (DNA or otherwise) should we strap the false-accuser onto the gurney as well?
Rape is an abomination is every sense of the word, but excepting the laws of nature, nothing is always “absolute”.

You naively act as though the Senators don't go in a huddle and decide who will vote for cloture and who will vote to finally pass the bill once it is merged with the House version... and they know in advance what the committee will do - it's all done to fool supporters like you.
What Cruz did is just like the politician who loads up a spending bill with pork for his state and then votes against the bill in the final version knowing in advance it will pass, no difference. The Senate wanted TPA, including Ted, and all they really haggled over was who was going on record for what. The only vote that mattered was the first TPA vote and Cruz gave it to them: His explanation is a pure political scam.
Unlike many here, I don’t think in terms of “all or nothing” especially when it comes to fallible politicians whose political self-interest is generally at variance with the interests of the American People and who need to be watched by the American People at every turn.
Having said that, I like Cruz, but right now, I like Trump better. A Cruz win would certainly not be a loss as far as I’m concerned.
