...Ron Conway, the San Francisco angel investor, helped to pioneer the Smart Tech Challenges Foundation, which put up $1 million to fund a variety of ideas that advance gun lock technology. The goal had been to create the "iPhone of guns," Conway said...
...at least some of the more than 30,000 gun deaths each year would be avoided if there were smart guns. In theory, the technology would reduce gun suicides, gun deaths from accidents and deaths involving stolen guns. Smart guns might have particular appeal to law enforcement who have to worry about their weapons being used against them in tense situations.
Conway's foundation gave money to 15 entrepreneurs working on smart gun technology, including "smart ammunition." The highest amounts went to those closest to bringing the product to market. Some of the projects focus on firearms that can be fired only when they receive a radio signal from someone with a watch or ring. Other guns unlock when they identify the owner's fingerprint or grip. The foundation has given grants to entrepreneurs working on mechanical locks to better secure guns.
...why shouldn't Silicon Valley get involved? We live in a world where technology has personalized many products -- our phone, our cars, even our smoke detectors. If tech can make a gun safer -- yes, it sounds like an oxymoron -- and make some money, venture capitalists should create smart gun funds much like they do with funds focused on specific sectors such as clean tech. Companies already working on RFID, biometrics and global positioning systems (for finding lost or stolen guns) should jump in as well. The personalized gun is not a panacea that will end gun deaths. But it would be a better gun if it works only in the owner's hands.

Now upgrading SmartGun feature #32/88, please wait.
Please turn your smart gun off for 10 seconds then re-start.
Now, if you believe “smart guns” are the wave of the future, Obonzo should mandate their use by all FedGov LEOs and the Armed Forces. Then, sit back and watch how fast POTUS is relieved of his job.
Once they perfect the smart hammer, I might deign to listen.
Like the government turning them ALL off.
DO NOT WANT.
Does anyone on this forum know ANY real gun owner who actually wants this crap?
Just so long as the police are mandated to have them...fat chance of that happening...
Was happy to see FOX acting a bit conservative yesterday - Allen-the-Lib Colmes was saying how there's such a small percentage of terrorists coming in with refugees that it's no reason to shut down our borders and keep them out.
A couple of the ladies asked how he knew the percentage because the government sure ain't keeping accurate tabs, hence San Bernardino... Then a male said that if one would use Obama's logic about guns - if we can stop even one incident... - then it follows that Obama should use that same logic on refugees/terrorists - if we can stop one terrorist, then all the rest is worth it.
They then managed to all agree that Obama's last concern is to protect the People and he wants to control them instead...
Those of us who actually believe what we say can actually make a difference by acting like we believe it...
Now for a short public service announcement to all on FR:
We need to ensure we don't get another Obama-like America Hater as the next President.
The best way to ensure that is to actively support a candidate as the next President.
I prefer Cruz and my money goes to his campaign, hence the Cruz link. If you like someone else, donate to him/her (find your own link to do it) and if you use FR and don't donate, then please don't complain about the welfare leeches or those who have Obama Phones because, functionally, you are no different than any other who enjoys the fruits of others' work for your own benefit.
PS - If you are one of those who cannot afford even a small donation to FR or a candidate, God Bless and happy FReeping!.....
GO CRUZ!! Keep it up Trump!!
It hurts! - and I'm not even in the same STATE!
I will not buy one, for several reasons. One, it will lead to more oppression in New Jersey for gun owners who remain in that cesspit if these come up for sale. Two, it is a certainty that such ‘smart guns’ will be monitored, tracked, and probably built to be shut down by the government at such time as the government feels necessary. Three, there is no actual need for it. Guns are mechanical devices that perform their function just fine as they are now. No need for an Ipistol
