Donald Trump
In Burlington Vermont yesterday, 7 January, Donald Trump had another packed rally. It seems as if it is the only kind that he has. In the speech, near the end, the Donald starts talking about the Second Amendment. He says that the 65 year old woman who defended herself in New Hampshire said that she is going to vote for Trump. He went on to say that gun free zones are bait for bad guys. He talked about how ridiculous it is that our military bases are gun free zones. He mentioned that we have to stop schools from being gun free zones, and that on day one of his presidency, he would end the gun free zones in the military. You can hear what Trump said about gun free zones starting about 1:04 on the video link above.
AP carries the story, but with a twist. They claim that Donald Trump said that he would end gun free zones in schools on day one. From Jill Colvin, AP:
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says he would eliminate gun-free zones in schools on his first day if he's elected to the White House.
There is a problem with that report. It is not what Donald Trump said. In context, Trump was talking about gun free zones on military bases. Then he mentions schools (where he wants to end gun free zones), and then he says that he will get rid of gun free zones on military bases on his first day as President. From Trump:
I will get rid of gun free zones on schools. You have to. And on Military bases, my first day, it gets signed.

Sounded pretty clear to me what Trump said.
Now THIS he *could* do. IIRC, “gun free” zones on bases was basically implemented by EO by Clinton. Trump could countermand it the exact same way with another EO.
If you listen to the speech, in context, it is clear that The Donald wants to get rid of gun free zones in schools. It is also clear that on day one of his presidency, he will sign an order eliminating 'gun free' zones on military bases.
It will be interesting to see how the mediots and some freepers spin this.
See, Trump’s just another New York liberal who hates guns...wait...what did he say???

Sometimes Trump makes sense.
Donald still needs to tune in to some details on his proposals... sometimes he can only be a bully pulpit for things that are controlled at a state level... but yes this is something he can undo. Why did Clinton ever do it anyhow. It made no sense then and never has. An armed force should guard itself wherever it is.
Trump isn’t claiming any group affiliation now except generic “American.”
I am saddened in one way, amused in another, to see him get labeled by the public as either conservative or “liberal” (we don’t have many actual liberals, most of the ones who say they are are actually illiberal) as if he claimed such a group affiliation.
He’s actually volunteered to be close to something like a blank slate, compiling an agenda as he goes. This actually requires “We The People” to get off our hineys and talk to Trump in more ways than the voting box. This ought to be part of EVERY presidential campaign, really, but Trump is the only one who isn’t just asking for a cheering section.
Do it on day 1. Make congress repeal that executive order if they desire to.
If there was an armed guard at Sandy Hook we probably never would have known the words Sandy Hook.
Aside from military bases, aren’t gun free zones state and local concerns?
Are people endorsing rule by Presidential fiat? I thought conservatives abhorred that.
He can’t, BUT he could certainly bully-pulpit the issue and create an EO as a memorandum of it (that doesn’t actually order anyone to do anything).
Just more of that cursed common sense being advocated by The Donald.
So many ways to make schools safer and we're talking about lunches and common core.
And I'm not sure lock down is the best way.
I love how Trump controls the narrative at the exact same time a sitting president is taking the exact opposite position. It’s like Obama is irrelevant, let alone stiff condescending and boring. I don’t know if Trump does this deliberately or by accident, but it is sure fun to watch.
There is a federal Law for gun free zones. It was deemed unconstitutional and a new one replaced it.
Yes they would be. Remember Trump operates on the power of positive influence. He sets and controls the narrative. It’s a brilliant way to accomplish what he wants to accomplish when he doesn’t have the personal control to do it. Trump is a master at this, no-one even comes close. And it’s so unusual most people don’t recognize it for what it is.
Check out post 15 and 17.
“What? Is he going to do it all by executive order?”
As Commander in Chief, the President can order the end of ‘Gun Free Zones’ on military bases with a simple military order.
This is the second recounting of these statements I have read, and this one reveals that the first account was flawed - it said that the school zones would be repealed first day. What Trump actually said is that military zones would be gone (which the President can do) and he would lead a movement to end school zones.
One easy way to end a lot of such debate would simply to enact a law where a “gun free zone” creates strict liability for the entity that creates it - they have to provide adequate security, or they are liable for any incidents in the same measure as the actual perpetrator.
Additionally, the liability needs to be personal, and attached to the persons who authorize the rule, as well as any successors (particularly for elected offices).
JMHO.
