New El Nino storm slams into Southern California

LOS ANGELES

Another El Nino-fueled storm soaked Southern California on Wednesday and brought with it flooding, mudflows and even a small tornado that struck Orange County in the early afternoon.

Pea-sized hail and 45-mph winds made their way south from San Luis Obispo, forcing the region to recognize that the season of storms has commenced. As much as 5 inches of rain was expected to drop across the Southland.

Still, Wednesday's rain was fickle, with clouds parting at times to allow the sun to shine.

A flash-flood warning was issued for the Ventura County coast around Solimar Beach, and landslides forced the partial closure of the 101 Freeway at the State Beaches offramp. Rainfall on the area's hillsides, denuded by a fire that broke out on Christmas, sent mud into the northbound lanes of the freeway. A concrete-lined ditch that runs alongside the freeway offered little drainage help because it was already overflowing with water.

"This is only the beginning," said a California Department of Transportation employee as he eyed a nearby hill, its scorched slope a menace when mixed with rain.

Less than two miles away, waves crashed against the cliffside homes of Mondos Beach as rain fell at a rate of about an inch an hour.

Even better, snowing in the Sierras. Ten feet from this storm alone.

I crossed the MT Rose hiway from Reno to Tahoe on Jan 2nd. It crested at 8250ft.

It appeared there was 5-6 feet already on the ground.

We'll see if another 10ft is added to that. Hope so, but I believe that was just a WeatherBell prediction of how much could fall with all the storms lined up over 10 days.

It’s what I heard a couple days ago on the local TV weather here in Sacramento.

This is really going to screw up the Socialist’s (Obama) destruction of the U.S. into a poverty banana republic.

My step-brother and his wife are happy about it. They’re fortunate enough to live where they don’t get much flooding when it rains hard in the LA area. I imagine those who are in flood-prone areas aren’t quite as happy. I feel for those folks. The footage I’ve seen on tv has been ugly.

Good that there’s a snowpack building. Now if only CA had built needed reservoirs instead of worshiping Gaia and Snail Darters.

Nothing in this story about San Diego (population 1,333,000) which was also hard hit.

And every news broadcast reminds us we are in a drought scolding Californians for not meeting our Great Leaders 25% water reduction goals they mandated.

You would think with as much flooding going on they would keep quiet about the “drought”.

It always takes two or even three winters of storms like this for them to finally stop yammering about drought.

Here we are, another dry/wet cycle operating right on schedule. “Drought” every 10-12 years or so, give or take.

We’re getting a bit tired of the rain in MS and the area along the paths of these things - would be nice if they could be trained to only rain (and snow) over areas that need it...
