SIOUX CENTER - During a bus tour stop in Sioux Center, Iowa last night, Senator Ted Cruz expressed support for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) through 2022.

Responding to a question from an ethanol investor from Iowa about whether he would allow the landmark energy program to continue through its current expiration in 2022, Sen. Cruz responded by expressing support for the RFS through 2022.

Senator Cruz also expressed passionate support for breaking through the so-called "blendwall." That "blendwall" makes it illegal for ethanol to expand its market penetration, and I intend to eliminate the EPA blendwall to get rid of that barrier, which will enable ethanol to expand in the marketplace to a much larger penetration to sell more ethanol…."

The comments were substantially repeated at another stop in Cherokee, Iowa the same evening. You can listen to audio of the remarks here. and below.

Cruz must be pretty desperate to win Iowa to break with his stance. However, I’ve been hearing that Trump is the “desperate” one in last day or so by Cruzers.

Listen to the audio on the site. Cruz’s own words. Pretending Cruz didn’t say it is not mature.

I didn’t know that the damnable subsidies lasted through 2022. The chances of repealing this law are remote or nil. Not a drop of ethanol would be sold if it had to exist on its own.

I'm a Cruz supporter but this sounds like he's wanting to have it both ways.

Ethanol isn't profitable without billions in tax-payer subsidies.

Would a President Cruz end Ethanol subsidies?

There are no longer any ethanol subsidies. Those ended last year and they were not renewed.

The remaining legislation is the Renewable Fuel Standard, which mandates the addition of a certain amount of ethanol to gasoline.

Given that there is an entire industry built around this artificial mandate, it is only fair to allow the mandate to wind down over time. An immediate halt would involve a serious displacement of employment and capital.

Cruz has been offering up everything but the kitchen sink lately.

Trump is for these subsidies or didn't you notice? He's not calling for an end to them in '22 or didn't you notice? You're kind of being hypocritical here or didn't you notice?

You need to actually listen to the recording. Cruz is firm on allowing the RFS to expire, firmly opposed to any kind of mandate, and just as firm on the idea that while the government should not be mandating ethanol, neither should they be imposing any limitations on ethanol if the free market is demanding it.

To present this as if it is a change in Cruz’s position or him pandering to the corn lobby is wrong.

Typical politician Flip flop.

No, typical Trump supporter nonsense.

Cruz sponsored legislation last winter that would phase out the RFS over five years.

That has been and continues to be his position.

Well since Levin excoriated Trump over this, one would hope Levin would be intellectually honest in hammering Cruz. But he won’t because he isn’t and is in the tank for his boy Cruz. Levin will ignore this and hammer Trump for his comments on Cruz being born in Canada. Levin is another one who thinks he can tell us how to vote.

They have to be weaned off it. I’m just not sure why you think this flip-flopping angle helps your candidate. It’s good for filling the daily irony quota though.

This is a major flip-flop from Cruz. I wonder how Rush and Levin will react to baby Cruz flip flopping.

Listen to the recording - no flip-flop. The group that posted this is the ethanol lobby, and they would love for Cruz to lose support over a perceived "flip-flop", but Cruz was firm in his stand - the RFS needs to expire, and there should be no ethanol mandate.

You don’t find this ironic at all? Trump was Trumpeting his love of corn subsidies a weak ago.

He’s got more waffles than a Waffle House lately.
Ted’s been an official US “Senate Club Member” for a few years, he’s no dummy. He thinks we are though.
