Senator Ted Cruz listens to Iowa farmers, supports Renewable Fuel Standard (Ethanol) through 2022

SIOUX CENTER - During a bus tour stop in Sioux Center, Iowa last night, Senator Ted Cruz expressed support for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) through 2022.

Responding to a question from an ethanol investor from Iowa about whether he would allow the landmark energy program to continue through its current expiration in 2022, Sen. Cruz responded by expressing support for the RFS through 2022.

Senator Cruz also expressed passionate support for breaking through the so-called "blendwall." That "blendwall" makes it illegal for ethanol to expand its market penetration, and I intend to eliminate the EPA blendwall to get rid of that barrier, which will enable ethanol to expand in the marketplace to a much larger penetration to sell more ethanol…."

The comments were substantially repeated at another stop in Cherokee, Iowa the same evening. You can listen to audio of the remarks here. and below.

Has he been working on it in the Senate?

He is still a Senator.

The current mandate is not a percentage, but a total volume of ethanol to be included. If more E85 is sold, less E10 is needed.

My mistake. I was relating to how the mandate is applied, rather than what it, in fact, is.

Under the circumstances, then, the obvious way to wind down the mandate is to reduce the incorporated tonnage requirement from year-to-year.

This may shock you, but I think saying the "Lords Prayer" before classes start in school, or before lunch, or sporting events or having a prayer before any gathering of folks for any good purpose - asking for blessings is a great idea. What is clearly wrong and not scriptural (to me) is to take a letter by an Apostle, written for a specific reason of God's message, and attempt to say it is part of their political campaign.

You don't lesson God's word by using it to elevate yourself. By the way, I once saw a van go by that was lettered as a 'Christian plummer' - it also had a big cross painted on it. To me that was cringe-worthy and no different than using it in a campaign.

Ethanol is not from food grade corn.

But it keeps farmers from growing food grade corn, which is why corn products for human consumption have gone up in price.

Brazil uses sugar cane, which is more economical for making ethanol because it is closer to what is needed for the base ingredient.

The whole thing is just a political setup, as ethanol is more of a pollutant than plain gas.

We have enough oil for hundreds of years as well as selling it to other countries to beef up our economy.

Yes. But getting the establishment politicians on board is the problem.

I get that many here consider the Rubio G8 thing a deal breaker, and I respect that. It’s not a deal breaker for me, although I do count it as a negative against him. Rubio certainly has flaws, but so do the others.

Here’s what I can’t wrap my head around: Trump is right there with Bernie Sanders and to the left of Obama and Hillary on health care (he’s *still* supportive of single payer). Trump is vocally pro-RFS. Trump is pro-Kelo. In the very recent past, Trump has been extremely pro-abortion. Trump donated to Hillary Clinton and voted for Barack Obama. Trump now says he was a big Reagan fan, but donated to Carter and Mondale against Reagan (and did not donate to Reagan).

And despite all that you put him in the same league as Cruz, and Rubio is disqualified over the gang of eight?

I don’t get it.

I don't think that's the case.

Thanks for the link.

Yes, true about getting others to sign on.

The majority of them are bought and paid for.

Well, that comparison might be applicable if Ted were riding around with a big cross emblazoned on his bus, but of course he isn’t.

When he speaks to a gathering of fellow Christians, he’s speaking to his brothers and his sisters-—his family in Christ. Of course faith is going to be a central issue of the conversation.

This is from 2011. There is at least sufficient documentation that he has been saying something different in IA.

2011 establishes a baseline. So since you are so absolutely certain, please provide said citation.

Why are you trying to eliminate comments? Usually that means you have lost the argument.

I'm not. I'm against character assassination with minimal support, just as you posted here. I supported my argument, that Cruz has ALWAYS said he would carry forward ethanol to 2017 as part of a phase out program. So unless you can prove that he no longer means to phase it out, then you have no argument and the post constitutes character assassination by selective excerpt, which I won't tolerate against a conservative.

Once again, Amanda Carpenter steps in to explain....

Is Amanda Carpenter still on CRuz staff? I thought she was working for CNN and CRuz Review.

It seems like folks are having to ‘step in’ to speak for CRuz, quite often.....wasn’t Levin fighting his fight with Trump, recently?

Great.

It may seem logical, but the vast territory of corn country has always been devoted to growing No. 2 yellow corn, which is mainly used for feeding animals.

Not that long ago, the mountains of corn grown would go to feed our livestock or it would go on barges down the mighty Mississippi, be loaded on ships, and sold for next to nothing to feed the livestock of people in other countries.

Now a large portion of that raw product is being used to make ethanol, and the other byproducts associated with ethanol production.

Food grade corn is a specialty product, and I doubt that the acreage devoted to it has changed much. If the prices have gone up, my guess is that this is probably attributable to the ever-soaring costs of inputs like land, fertilizer, herbicides and seed.

By the way, though I’m an Iowan, smack-dab in the middle of the corn patch, I don’t support subsidies or the RFS mandate. I’ve been warning for years that this crony capitalist boondoggle, while enriching a few for a little while, amounts to building our economic house on shifting sand. It’s quite dangerous over the long haul.

Yes, it’s all subsidized.

Farmers have for decades been paid NOT to farm also.

Cruz was for a five year phase out all along.

How long ago was that?

Ask the other people in the Senate who won't vote for it.

Now he is for 6 years, until 2022.

5 years starting when he's president. You're forgetting that Cruz is trying to get others to vote for it. He's doing that by offering five years. Why "hate" on Cruz when he's the one trying to stop it.

Hatin' on Trump supporters takes a hit on your credibility.

As posters go, I'm pretty patient when I have to correct posters who are "hating" on Cruz. And then there are those posters who hate on anybody who legitimately criticizes Trump.

To maintain your credibility you may want to lecture some of those folks.

It's Bush's Trump's fault!

On a blame Cruz thread you complain about "Trump's fault (sic)". Okay?
