German Chancellor Angela Merkel has voiced outrage over the sexual assaults and thefts that male gangs inflicted on women in Cologne on New Year's Eve.
Women have made at least 90 criminal complaints to police about the harassment by gangs at Cologne's main railway station on Thursday night. The scale of the attacks has shocked Germany. About 1,000 drunk and aggressive young men were involved.
Witnesses and police said the men were of Arab or North African appearance.
Mrs Merkel called Cologne's mayor Henriette Reker on Tuesday and "expressed her outrage over these disgusting attacks and sexual assaults".
The chancellor said everything must be done "to find the perpetrators as quickly and comprehensively as possible and punish them, regardless of their origin or background".
There is an intense debate in Germany about refugees and migrants, who arrived in record numbers last year. But Mayor Reker urged people not to jump to conclusions about the Cologne assailants.

Germany needs to get rid of Merkel pronto. When are elections held in Germany? France has to wait until 2017 to unelect its’ leader I sure hope Germany does not have to wait that long too.

Don’t complain about what YOU permit. That’s insanity.
None of Merkel’s alleged “disgust” will translate into any change to Germany’s liberal immigration policies that allowed a foreign criminal underclass to grow and flourish there to begin with. So talking about her “disgust” is just one more of Merkel’s typical empty political gestures.
May I suggest using piano wire?
Then she added: "Once the women are punished, the young men should be taught that these things need to be kept more quiet in the future".
