Iowa isn't the only state where Ted Cruz has managed to surpass Donald Trump in state-level polls of Republican voters. The Texas senator is edging Trump in California, too, according to a new poll.
Cruz leads the outspoken billionaire 25 percent to 23 percent in the latest NBC Bay Area Field Poll of GOP voters in the Golden State. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is third with 13 percent support, while retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson rounds out the top four at 9 percent.
According to the poll, Cruz has risen 19 percentage points since October 2015, when he stood at 6 percent support among California Republicans. Trump has seen a 6-point increase in the same timeframe. Cruz also edges out Trump for the top spot in the Washington Examiner's presidential power rankings.
Nevertheless, polling data suggests Trump is in a far more precarious position in California than several of his GOP rivals.
Cruz and Rubio were significantly more popular as second-choice candidates than Trump, and both senators boast higher favorability ratings than the bombastic New York businessman. Twenty-two percent of voters preferred Cruz as their second choice, 14 percent chose Rubio and 11 percent chose Trump.
Nearly every subgroup, besides voters age 65 and older, were more likely to support Cruz over Trump, including women, who prefer Cruz to Trump 24-21 percent.
And while 45 percent of Republican primary voters in California hold an unfavorable opinion of Trump, only 20 percent view Cruz unfavorably. Cruz's 69 percent favorability rating is the highest of any GOP candidate in California.
Asked to consider Trump as the GOP nominee, 55 percent of voters expressed enthusiasm while a combined 43 percent indicated they would be "dissatisfied" or "upset." Meanwhile, 67 percent of Republicans would approve of Rubio as the nominee (24 percent would not) and 74 percent would approve of Cruz (21 percent would not).
While California's primary isn't until June 7, the state's 172 Republican delegates comprise nearly 15 percent of the total number of delegates a candidate would need to secure the GOP nomination ahead of the Republican National Convention in mid-July.
The survey of 1,003 registered California voters, including 325 Republicans, was conducted Dec. 16-Jan. 3. Results contain an overall margin of error plus or minus 3.2 percent.
Looks like I might have to vote twice in California.
WTF??? Who gives a damn what the Democrats think of the GOP race?
“And while 45 percent of Republican primary voters in California hold an unfavorable opinion of Trump, only 20 percent view Cruz unfavorably. Cruz’s 69 percent favorability rating is the highest of any GOP candidate in California.”
Donald Trump is an Arnold Schwarzenneger without the muscles. Apparently Californian’s remember how vainglorious actors and narcissistic show men make terrible leaders.
This has been posted 4 times already.
Do you people know what the hell a search function is?
So what? Do you really think anyone other than a democrat has a ghost of a chance in California?
* amongst the 37 Republican voters remaining in California.
Optimist.
As a former resident of Orange cty and staunch conservative Republican, I resent that.
This tells me that a lot of people in California want to ship the illegals back home!
Here's the point of what I'm saying:
WHO is drawing the LARGEST CROWDS?
WHO does the MSM obsess over CONSTANTLY?
The polls are akin to measuring whether buyers like chocolate or vanilla when we see that chocolate is BOUGHT 3 to 4 times more often than vanilla.
A POLL does NOT change the REALITY of what is.
Trump's popularity is HUGE as compared to his competition.
That's the POLL I'm watching.
We’re in a primary. People in each state will choose the nominee for their parties who will then face each other in a general election. Before being in the general, a candidate has to defeat people in his/her own party.
The “NBC Bay Area Field Poll,” huh?
Uh, huh.
When you show me a picture of 25,000 people attending a Ted Cruz rally, I’ll begin to believe it. Until then, I’ll just believe it’s BS put out by the MSM and GOP-e in a pathetic attempt to siphon people away from the person who’s TRULY leading, as is evident to anyone with their eyes open.
Yeah.. as if the politicians who were elected are any better, and more often the worst of the two.
I suggest you stop making pointless statements and get your head out of your rectum... unless you're giving yourself a prostate exam for cancer.
Large crowds, especially for a game show host, are not a very good barometer either. Name any TMZ headliner and you can bet they’ll have significant crowds anywhere they go, especially if they’re running for president. People want the chance to be there when Trump says something outrageous, they just want to see The Donald and it doesn’t cost them anything, and some really intend to vote for him and are there to show support.
AMAZING!!
HOLY COW!!!!
NO DOUBT TED CRUZ WILL CARRY KULYFOURKNEEUH!
