Washington Post: Seven things I learned attending Ted Cruz events
Washington Post ^ | January 4, 2016 | Katie Zezima

...

1.) Cruz sticks to the script

Cruz rarely deviates from the script.... His backers value the fact that he's preternaturally on message, believing that the chance of him torpedoing his candidacy with a verbal gaffe is low.

2.) His rallies have gotten bigger and flashier

... But over the past month, Cruz's gatherings have become bigger and flashier... It felt more like a general election swing...

3.) So who shows up to these things?

Cruz's rallies tend to be pretty packed, both with die-hard supporters clad in Cruz swag and people on the fence.... The majority of the undecided voters I have spoken with have said they were very impressed after hearing Cruz speak. Many of them said they were undecided coming into a rally and supported him when it was over. Cruz does have his super fans. There was the one who made Cruz into "Captain Constitution."

...

4.) His theater background

... He knows exactly when to stop talking to maximize applause. ... His rallies unfold like a play in a three acts: the jokey warm-up, the red meat, the optimistic end. ...

5.) He's a funny guy

Cruz is known in Washington for being abrasive and disliked, but he's pretty funny, friendly and approachable on the campaign trail. Cruz specializes in dad jokes and political humor, telling cute anecdotes about his daughters, especially about when they are feisty or somehow undermine him.

...

6.) He is a mingler

Cruz's wife insists that he is shy, but he spends a whole lot of time meeting voters after his speeches. He tends to run behind, in part because he spends so much time shaking hands, doling out hugs and signing copies of his book...

7.) He's a lawyer who likes data and strategy

Cruz often tells crowds that he's a "data guy" who likes numbers.

...

Interesting. I don’t know if the author is on the right or not, but this is a very interesting insight. I had not scene much of Cruz’s events in recent weeks/months, and good to see he seems to be showing a different side on the trail.

What is your assessment of this piece, Isara?

Pro, neutral, or hitpiece?

Does young Katie make The List, or not?

Pretty impressive list. I was surprised to hear he played bad guys in high school plays. A little Reagan mix in there, very happy about that. Poker faces etc are so much more productive than one who can swear and belittle and brag about oneself incessantly.

On the excerpt you posted, it looks neutral to pro.

Of course Senator Cruz is disliked by DC insiders. He is not falling for their seniority game, as in “Boy, when you have been here as long as I have, only then will you have earned the right to be out-spoken. For now, do as your leadership says!”

Cruz is very warm and friendly in person, as well as having a great sense of humor. His family is charming, as well.

I think that she admires and respects Ted Cruz as much as a reporter from Washington Post can.

When you spend a lot of time with Ted Cruz and know him, you can't help but like him.

So, she doesn't go on The List, for now.

It's time once again to make a List of the Uniparty Media mouthpieces & shills, because the old generation of Clinton Media shills is being replaced by shining-eyed snot-nosed Lefty "journalist" brats, fresh from the university Progressive propaganda mills.

As we saw with the "heckler" story from this weekend, we have a bunch of eager new Clinton water-carriers.

We will take many scalps, in this new fight. We have learned the ways of the fork-tongues, and have many new weapons - Twitter, LinkedIn, email, & texting.

The most interesting couple of sentences in the article may well be, "The majority of the undecided voters I have spoken with have said they were very impressed after hearing Cruz speak. Many of them said they were undecided coming into a rally and supported him when it was over."

It looks like Cruz is catching fire.

You still have to have a good working relationship with your co workers even if you get promoted to being the boss. Cruz has work to do. He also needs to appeal to moderates in his own party not so much to win the nomination but to have then work for him in the general. He needs also to reach out to independents to win the White House. I will only vote for him if he is the nominee. He has a long way to go.

I have never understood this. Each and every one of those people got there the same way, by being elected by the people they represent. And each and every one of them could be removed the same way. One having importance over another just goes against my grain, and until Ted Cruz, for the most part, I have seen no one do anything except knuckle under because they are so afraid of losing their seat. Which tells me that they have no principles to stand on in the first place, or they would be like Cruz and take the arrows shot at them with grace and class.

I loved it when Cruz said that McConnell was “willing to say things that are not true” classy way of saying “he’s a liar”.
