Thought experiment: what if Trump carried New York?

Trump's support is nearly the strongest in New York. Now, I can already hear what you're thinking: That's crazy, Jazz. Republicans don't carry New York. It's owned and operated by the Democrats. Well, that's generally true, but if you spend any amount of time watching Empire State politics you know that things have been changing a bit of late. Remember that Governor Andrew Cuomo actually lost the vote in upstate New York in 2014. And he didn't lose by a little, either. It was a wipe out. In fact he only carried eleven of the state's 57 counties outside of the Big Apple. He still won the election, but it was a much narrower victory than the Democrats were used to enjoying and virtually all of his support came out of New York City.

Let's put that in perspective here. Keep in mind that Trump wouldn't actually have to win in New York City to pull this off. Cuomo's total margin of victory was 54% and almost all of it came from the five boroughs. Trump would only need to tip the scales in the city enough to offset that 5% margin needed to swing the statewide vote because he'll carry upstate in a landslide. (And he's already very strong on Long Island.)

Could he pull it off? Lots of people go to work every day in New York City and see his name plastered all over everything. Trump provides one heck of a lot of jobs in the city, including plenty of people who are too busy with their own lives to spend their days watching MSNBC. And just take a walk around Brooklyn these days (assuming you can afford an armed guard for parts of it) and see how happy the locals are...

I think Trump is the only R candidate capable of carrying both New York and CA.

Why not? He’s a Favorite son after all—they like him in the Big Apple. Christie will not carry New Jersy, Bush, Florida etc... they know the truth about them in their home states. In New York they know Trump—He is Brash, abrasive even—just like them-—but he gets things done. Anyone with half an eye can see that’s what is needed.

Yes, de B. sure is. Everyone HATES the stinking COMMIE!

But that's what ya get when only 25% of those eligible to vote do so. Next time, the turnout WILL be much larger.

I remember seeing them driving their pink El Dorados back in the 70s. You can’t even caricature it.

They were caricatures, but still very real back then.

Trump will carry NY, NJ, and PA (for starters). He's been deeply involved in NY/NJ politics for decades and has a huge base of operations there. That make's a D path to electoral victory a near impossibility.

One of the main arguments for Trump is that he can put a lot of supposedly "safe" blue states into play, something no other Republican nominee could do.

I see no way for the democrats to triumph if Trump carries New York state. Their path is closed.

When New York is called for Trump, I uncork the Champagne bottle that's still sitting in the corner from 08' and 12'. .

Bears repeating from the article:

"And Trump is already very strong in Florida (the traditional bugaboo for the GOP these past couple of cycles) with a persistent lead over Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical match up. If you take New York and Florida off the table for Hillary, where is her path to victory?"

Go New York and Florida! Get out the Vote!

New York can elect Republicans - they elected Republican George Pataki as Governor three times in a row (’94-’06).

Trump is YUGE in New York for name recognition and reputation. He will likely make YUGE inroads into the Democrat base of Blacks, Hispanics, Jews and working class Catholics.

Ivanka is a practicing Jew, and her husband’s family (Kushners) are YUGE among the wealthy Jewish elite in the City. Israelis have shifted strongly against Obama, and US Jews have good reason to be concerned about massive muslim immigration. There are about a million Jews in the City - disproportionately likely to vote.

Upstate is in a widespread state of civil disobedience over the over-reaching SAFE Act gun restrictions of the current Democrat Governor - almost none are complying with the reporting/registration requirements.

No, and for many reasons, but foremostly because he doesn't need it. Just needs Ohio. This is Bush's '04 map redux - live it, learn it, love it - because this is what Trump is being told:

Would we be happy? Yes
Would we be surprised? No

When this man first began his campaign it was beyond belief he was serious. When we found him to be dead serious, it was then we begin to believe he can do it. The man can just about take anything he wishes. Some fights my be more difficult than others, but he is fighting to win and will not accept failure.

GO TRUMP - We want it all!

Believe me, the support for Hitlery among women is not nearly so high as many believe. Women are the majority of registered voters, if they REALLY wanted her in the white house whe would be entering her final year of eight this month. I don’t think they actually want her MORE after the past eight years of absurdity, I am not a supporter of feminism but I give women credit for more sense than to give Clinton the majority of their vote this year.
