Most national polls show Republican frontrunner Donald Trump trailing likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and faring worse than other GOP hopefuls against her.
That raises an obvious question: Could doubts about Trump's strength in a general election derail his bid for the Republican nomination, or would GOP caucus attendees and primary voters simply ignore poll numbers that suggest Trump would be a risky bet in November?
SNIP
But Quinnipiac University's Dec. 16-20 survey showed Trump's image with all registered voters at 33 percent favorable/59 percent unfavorable - dismal numbers, and the highest unfavorable rating of any GOP hopeful.
Trump trailed Clinton by 11 points, 49 percent to 38 percent, in the mid-December Fox News ballot test, while Cruz and Clinton were tied at 45 percent and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio held a 45 percent to 43 percent lead over Clinton. The Quinnipiac poll found Trump trailing Clinton 47 percent to 40 percent, while Cruz and Clinton were tied at 44 percent and Rubio trailed Clinton by a single point, 44 percent to 43 percent.
But not every survey showed Trump trailing Clinton so dramatically in hypothetical match ups. For example, a Dec. 17-21 CNN/ORC survey showed the two candidates separated by only two points (Clinton 49 percent, Trump 47 percent). Of course, Cruz held a 2-point lead over Clinton and Rubio a 3-point lead in that survey, seemingly confirming that Trump is a weaker nominee against Clinton than at least two other Republican hopefuls.
But even if additional surveys between now and the Iowa caucuses show Trump's relative weakness in the general election, it is not yet clear that GOP voters - and Trump voters - will care. Opinion about the importance of "electability" as an issue for voters has been divided over the years.

How do you know TRUMP is not a constitutionalist?
Mostly he is a citizen, not a PAC mule pol.
Simple. This is the TRUMP media assault the GOPE promised, trying to split the conservatives off from TRUMP.
They can float Cruz filled with air to get that done, and then let his air out, run their establishment picks through the gap.
Except TRUMP supporters won’t split off to Cruz in a primary.
That’s killing the Establishment “splitter strategy”, because, we aren’t going any place.
The base? Who is the base? TRUMP is smoking the field.
Cruz is polling in IOWA and then he’s done.
One has to go out of one’s way to find negative poll numbers for Trump. Polls now are unreliable anyway. They will be more accurate when it gets close to the election(s) and they poll likely voters.
The more Trump is allowed to speak directly to voters the more they connect with him.
More of the public (morons) get their ‘news’ from Facebook if at all or through the biased MSM.
Hillary’s support is very weak. The more you see of her, the more she lies and the more you hate her.
Don’t be fooled.
Trump can beat her easily.
“T” for Tsunami!
I am with YOU, girl.
If you look at the crowd factor, Hitlery does NOT have enthusiastic support.
How could The Donald be considered the losing candidate between the two of them? The crowds of supporters are unreal.
No more crap about who is “electable”. . .I don’t give a crap what Karl Rove thinks about who is electable. . .because these pundits don’t know didily. . .I vote for who I want because it’s RIGHT. . .not based on prediction of results!!! If Trump isn’t electable, than America isn’t savable.
Either Trump or Cruz is very electable against Shrillary, IMHO. And that will become increasingly clear as the year unfolds and Shrillary will no longer be able to get away with her “hidin’ from the folks” routine.
Ahh yes, electaaaaaaabity!!! The siren call of the GOPe calling our ship toward the rocks of their chosen candidate who also happens to be the MSM’s handpicked loser. As always the siren sings the song of the poll that that shapes opinion rather than reflects it. Trump can’t beat Hillary!! Of course not because, by Jove, the MSM has been telling us Hillary is inevitable since day one. Why would they change their tune now?
I am sick of this dance. I since fear in the GOPe and in the Clinton camp.
sense fear, that is.
Nonsense
Itâs not stupid to notice charisma
Trump has the charisma of hungry crocodile.
Oh please!!! And no sooner than if Ted were to take over as the front runner the MSM and fav publications where the GOPe goes to leak would be publishing the SAME crap about Ted being “unelectable.” I am sick of this tripe being used against any candidate not a GOPe handpicked choice (cough JEB!) to try to short circuit the democratic primary process.
Both Trump and Cruz are imminently electable because they have the spirit and courage for the fight ahead. In contrast, Christie and Jeb! and likely Rubio will run a knee pad campaign apologizing for existing in a way that doesn’t meet with the media’s approval. “We are sorry we are suck arse scum, please like us cause we said we are sorry!! Oh and vote for us!! We promise safe zones for all and not to take your free stuff away.”
If these “electable” candidates can’t beat Trump among Republicans, why would one think they would do better than Trump in the general election.
This makes absolutely no sense.
Can we have a freaking campaign before a winner is declared?
Campaigns help people decide.
This poll is an attempt to pick the nominee.
GOP primary voters = conservatives, evangelicals, etc
General election voters = independents, Democrats, left wingers, etc as well as conservatives etc
It's a different electorate.
TOTAL BULL!
