The standard strategy among Democrats is to wait until the Republicans have chosen a candidate before attacking him. Why spray insecticide on a swarm of cockroaches if all of them are going to die except one anyway? Wait for that one and step on him.
Of course, this does not go both ways because Republicans don't generally attack Democrats, so the Democrats aren't afraid to present one unopposed candidate such as Mrs. Clinton. Unfortunately for them, they didn't count on Donald Trump.
