It was the Detroit News headline "Trump goes after Ford Motor Co." not how long Hillary went overtime in the restroom that got our attention. Donald Trump made a whistle stop outside Grand Rapids, Michigan to take aim at Ford’s plans to expand production in Mexico. Trump promised if elected he would threaten manufacturers with big tariffs on imports to discourage building manufacturing plants south of the border.
Trump to Ford, "If you build that plant in Mexico, I’m going to charge you 35 percent on every car, truck part that you send into our country," he said. "Every single one." Trump went further saying he would engage in tough negotiations with car companies to build new plants in the US and Michigan. Political analysts say Trump’s proposal would at the very minimum require congressional approval and possibly violate NAFTA.

I don’t know. I would hope Trump and Carl have a handle on all the issues and details. Carl has already accepted Sec Treasury.

Exporting US food products for processing in China, particularly meats, then bringing it back for sale and consumption in the US never made sense to me. Two trans-oceanic shipments are less than the labor cost differential? It’s just bizarre. I can’t help but envision how well that’s going to work in the event of a large scale natural disaster or war.

I recall Reagan utilizing protective tariffs in a few instances, myself. Yes and as I recall for cheap steel imports from Japan for instance.

What’s missing from this thread is deliberate currency manipulation by other countries to keep the trade deficit high. Trump has consistently said that tariffs are the tool to use against deliberate currency manipulation against America.

You can be for tariff free destructive trade or you can be a patriot, but you cannot be both.

You seem to think that small companies
enjoy buying from foreign sources. It's actually a massive pain in the ass. I would much rather buy from a supplier down the street.
Find a way to mitigate the current tax/regulatory environment enough to make one appear, and he'll get my business right away. Cut off my foreign supplier without making the new US supplier appear first and I go out of business.
It's a pretty simple scenario, and has nothing to do with emotional arguments about "Free Trade."

"And everybody knows how much Americans love paying higher prices"
The continuous pursuit of the lowest possible price inevitably leads to the lowest possible cost of labor, equalized world wide.
And I don't think Americans want to compete for jobs at $1.00/hr without benefits.
Because there are millions in South America alone that will work for that wage. When Asia is factored in, probably 100's of millions.

So what do you buy that cannot be MADE IN AMERICA? There is nothing that can't be made in America.
There are many things that aren't being made in America because they can't be made here for a price that American consumers will support due to our country's existing tax/regulatory environment. No tariff can change that.
