Surely some active-duty and retired volunteers could be found?

Utterly chickensh*t.

With all the crap upon which the government spends its money, they can’t manage this????

Unbelievable.

More obama hate-the-military BS.

My father, a Navy vet, was just laid to rest at the nearby National Military Cemetary in October.. He was given a 21 gun salute by a VFW chapter comprised of men in their 60’s and 70’s. The shell casings were placed in a bag and given to my mother following the committal service. I was so impressed with the respect and dignity offerred, and the reverence by which the volunteers carried themselves.
As an Air Force vet myself, I would want the 21 gun salute in order for my family to have the same experience in my passing. It lends itself to the finality of the death, and aids tremendously in the grieving process.

This is typical of governments, whether a school dept or the Air Force; when their budget demands are not met, they throw a tantrum by cutting the most publicly noticeable item they can. In the case of a school dept, they cut art, books, or chalk instead of cutting the 42 assistant vice principal positions. In the case of the Air Force, they leave their multi-billion dollar boondoggles intact such as the F35, but have no money for a funeral salute. It’s petty and it’s typical of bureaucracies.

I’m betting that there are hundreds, even thousands, of military veterans who would be more than willing to answer this call to honor a fallen comrade.

There was a time — long, long ago when I was an army bugler. I played over 100 funerals before going to Viet Nam. The firing squad as well as the bugler were important to the family. Several years ago I found out that recordings were used instead of buglers.
Sad times.

This is what one gets with a liberal female as the Secretary of the USAF and the highest ranking officer of the USAF a female. As a former USAF Honor Guard member I think this is absolutely a disgrace.

Recall the “closing” of free-standing memorials by this administration. Expect more of this BS in Obomba’s last year.

What, in the heck, am I missing here?

When we buried my Dad there was an honor guard that fired the three volleys. It seems to me they used M-1s. None were active duty military i.e. they were, technically, volunteers.

It also seems to me there was a line item cost for it in the bottom line. It wasn't much...the cost of bullets (I have one of the shell casings) and a stipend for the members of the honor guard. The point is, family members paid the entire cost of the honor guard.

The more difficult task, in the long run, may be buglers to blow taps. I only know this by anecdote but have heard many military units don't use buglers these days. Some events enhanced by such use recordings.

Most veteran funeral salutes I’ve been to I
It has been volunteers doing the 3 round salute, even at national cemeteries, regardless of branch.

The cost of this is not only chump change to FedGov, it is chump change's equivalent of coins that have fallen down under the couch cushions. They probably spend more on teaching the etiquette of using hand sanitizer at an Academy mandatory transgender awareness class. And how many 21-gun salutes would it take to equal just one - JUST ONE - of the First Lard-ass' AF1 vacation flights?

It's another deliberate slap in the face of the veterans and families that they can't be rid of fast enough. Bastards, all of them- and that includes the feckless, spineless GOP-e who can't manage to keep funding the former military, the present military or the future military, but somehow manages to subsidize any-and-all flat-out freeloaders (foreign and domestic) on a lifetime basis, along with making sure Tom Donohue & the USCofC continues to have a well-funded and doubtless very Merry Christmas.

To all the FReepers on this thread... the Three Shot Volley should not be confused with the 21 Gun Salute. They are two very different things.
