That is absolutely ridiculous, unless there was only one toilet and it was occupied. Surely there were several stalls. Whenever I went to the theater in DC growing up and Mrs Nixon, Mrs. Johnson or Mrs Carter was there with their daughters, the Secret Service made all of us leave the Ladies’ Room and wait at a distance until the First Family came out again, no matter what.

The reason is one many women are familiar with: An unexpected line for the loo. While Clinton waited for the ladies’ room to clear out, time ticked down and the debate organizers allowed the show to go on without her.
