Moderate Republican Rep. Richard Hanna of New York plans to announce his retirement, leaving a competitive open seat for Republicans to defend.

The news, which was first reported early Sunday morning by The Post-Standard in Syracuse, shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. He is a 64-year-old father of two kids under the age of 10 years old and is personally wealthy.

Caption from photo at link (Hanna didn’t face a Democratic opponent in 2014). Why would they bother. It would be no surprise, that Hanna voted along with the Democrats on most issues. Moderate my arse.

What I remember from the last primary Claudia Tenney was a fine conservative who I hope will consider running for the seat again.

She is running again. I’m guessing it’s a big reason he’s leaving.

The GOP wasn’t doing anything with it anyway.

Hopefully he will be replaced by Claudia Tenney, who is much more conservative than he is.

Katko’s district gave Romney just 41%. It’s the most dem district held by a Republican. Anything better than a rank communist there is a plus.

NY’s Republican party is a joke. It’s mostly Big Government & Union arse kissers.
As I have mentioned many times before, NY is more of a labor union state than a big “D” Democrat state.
Both GOPe-Pubbies and Demon-rats conspire with public unions to loot the state.

The one saving grace for NY State, is that The Donald will carry NY in the general election. Against Common core, for bringing jobs back to the US and Wall Street familiarity will work in his favor.

Hillary is so despised by so many, that even acting as Santa Claus and giving away the sun and the moon won’t help her.

Excellent news. He definitely needed to be replaced, and I’m glad I don’t have to see his name on the ballot anymore.

Richard Hanna is by far the most pro-abortion Republican in Congress (even more pro-abortion than Charlie Dent of PA-13 and Robert Dold of IL-10). I can see someone calling Hanna a “moderate” on other issues, but his voting record on life issues is that of a pro-abortion extremist.

Hanna’s CD (NY-22) is one of the more Republican districts in Upstate New York. Romney actually carried the NY-22 n the 2012 presidential election despite the drubbing that Obama gave him statewide. The RATs don’t hold a single U.S. House seat in the Northeast that was carried by Romney over Obama, and they won’t be able to beat Assemblywoman Claudie Tenney (who will win both the GOP and Conservative Party nominations) next year.

There are several dozen GOP congressmen whom I would like to see kicked out in the primary (including Long Island’s Peter King and New Jersey’s Rodney Frelinghuysen) becore I even would think about unseating Congressman John Katko. We’re very fortunate to have someone as conservative as Katko in that Syracuse-based district that Obama carried by like 17% in 2012, and he’s probably the only shot we have of keeping a liberal Democrat from taking back that seat.

Uber-RINO Richard Hanna was sure to lose the primary. As mentioned, he was the most pro-abort Republican in Congress.

Ex-Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney is the candidate that Republicans need to rally around. I think that Republicans are marginally favored to hold this seat, though not assured of victory.

NY’s Republican party is a joke.

Hey that's Trumps party. Remember that Bloomberg won in NY.

He was far from certain to lose the primary and far from certain to lose the election even if he did (last time he had the Independence party ballot line and there was no democrat).

So it’s very good he’s quitting.
