The quest for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination has turned into a race with three big lanes - establishment voters and social conservatives, plus Donald Trump's coalition of blue collar GOP voters.
In setting the stage for a possible three-candidate showdown for the GOP nomination, this split bodes particularly well for social conservatives, who staged strong but ultimately failed runs in past two-way races.
There's a lot to be said for driving in the social conservative lane. That candidate gets a well-defined base of voters that's been there before and that turns out. Consider the last few Republican presidential fights in 2008 and 2012. In both races, a strong social conservative candidate emerged from the field and garnered about one-third of the vote after the Iowa caucuses - a good showing, but not good enough to snag the nomination.
In 2008, Mike Huckabee emerged as the social conservative alternative to the establishment candidates Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. In 2012, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum edged out Mr. Romney in Iowa and emerged as his longest-lasting opponent.

What a pathetic bunch of wishful diversionist crap. Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney and Santorum mentioned in connection with what's going on now? Really? I'm a dumb ass country boy but I'm not THAT dumb.
This is a great new entry in the Wile E. Coyote Trump Frustration Award contest. What silly stupid shiite!
Jeez...the RINO establishment is reduced to GRASPING AT STRAWS.
...and it's really neat when the Fairy Princess hits them all with pixie dust and they turn into butterflies and live happily ever after doing aerobatics at Mach 5.
These people are as deluded as the democrats. But then, they've been drinking from the same lead punchbowl.
The article seems silly.
The fact is though, that there is absolutely nothing at all conservative about Trump.
Neither economic or social.
“plus Donald Trump’s coalition of blue collar GOP voters”
Sigh. Even the WSJ keeps repeating this shibboleth. Both my wife and myself have multiple degrees and we hang out with professionals with multiple degrees, and believe me, many of us know just how much this country is in trouble, and we also know that almost no one in the Uniparty wants to fix anything. They just want to keep the free caviar, free airplane tickets and free luxury box tickets to professional sports events flowing.
