so, if your theory is right, and the sample is too small relative to the general population to be reliable, then the numbers for Trump might even be higher? Right?

Seriously? Cruz was completely taken off his game and message by a couple of barbs from Rubio. They are STILL on that in the media.
And everyone has dirt. Everyone. Trump has had his aired for six months now, with no effect.

I like Ted Cruz, but don’t know if he’s ready for a Presidential campaign. By contrast, Donald Trump has star quality and has managed the MSM for years.

Guess that’s why every poll, even the ones that weren’t on line, said Trump came out fine.

You mean plus one in IOWA. Not nationally. He isn’t close nationally. And yes, RCP is an AVERAGE, but the three newest polls all have him trailing, and, interestingly, the newer the poll, the more he trails in IA.

You might not be aware of it, but a fair amount of the people who pick Trump in these polls say they wouldn’t really vote for him.
So...we shall see.

Cruz will pick up most of the Huckabee, Santorum, Rubio, Carson, Fiorina and Paul voters when they inevitably drop out, just as he did with Walker and Perry.I completely agree with you on this. I believe that DJT has duped all the lazy low information types that fall for the "Yes we can! Yes we can!" chanting of a real estate swindler Democrat turned faux-conservative Reality Television star. Those that favor other candidates are certainly not going to fall into Trumps lap... It helps Ted more than anything for the race to weed out less viable candidates.
To: LS
No. If the race is limited to:
Ted 21.4%
Jeb 13.9%
Carson 8.2%
Rubio 20.9%
Trump 31.6%
So without Santorum, Carly, Christie, and the rest, Trump still has a substantial lead.

With all the soaring and catching fire for the past two months, one would think that Cruz was in orbit.In orbit around the massive ego of DJT?

That is simply baloney and you have no basis for that. Most of the polls, state and national, are worded along the lines of "if the primary were held today, who would you vote for?"
But I hate to burst your bubble, but the polls that DO measure "intensity" of support? Trump has a very large lead over Cruz.

Political Kill Rate.
Hillary = 4 > Incompetence as SOS.
Ted Kennedy = 1 > Drunk Driving and Fleeing the Scene.
Trump = 0
Hillary + Obama = Thousands due their Middle East Policies and overthrowing Quadafi and attempting the same with Assad. Hillary is ISIS’s Grandmother while Obama is busy coaching their J.V. Team and supplying the Game Equipment and Uniforms.
To: House Atreides
Here's the breakdown: Donald Trump: 29.7 percent Ted Cruz: 20.4 percent Marco Rubio: 15 percent Jeb Bush: 12.5 percent ROFL! No credibility of this poll. No way Jeb! Boooooooooooosh is at 12.5% in any poll.
(Not a commentary on Trump/Cruz.)

“In orbit around the massive ego of DJT?”
You must have failed to get the memo. Trump, with his massive ego, is doing it all for Hillary, since he likes Hillary.
Cruz supporters say he is doing it all for Cruz, since he likes Cruz.
