Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, on Friday defended his decision to skip a major vote in the Senate that afternoon to fund the government through September, and he took a swipe at a GOP rival who called on him to resign from Congress.
In an interview with CBS News' Face the Nation host John Dickerson, Rubio was asked to respond to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, who told Politico Friday that Rubio should resign from the Senate after missing the critical vote.
"Look, I'm running for president," Rubio told Dickerson in Dubuque, Iowa ahead of his town hall. "We do our job everyday. Even before I got on the air with you today, we were going through some constituent service work where I'm personally intervening on behalf of people in our office. When there are important votes, especially those where I can be a decisive voice, I'm going to be there."
Rubio described the spending package as a "massive, grotesque piece of legislation" and explained he's focusing on the campaign trail in order to win election and prevent similar votes from happening again in Washington.
"That's why I'm out campaigning. I want these votes to start to matter again," he said.

Brave Sir Rubio ran away
Bravely ran away away
When the Budget reared its ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled
Yes, brave Sir Rubio turned about
And gallantly he chickened out
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat
Bravest of the brave, Sir Rubio!
That perfectly illustrates the two-faces of Rubio.
Marcoward Rubio.
It’s probably because HE WOULD have voted FOR it, and didn’t want to lose any votes to the right for supporting bad legislation.
Either way RUBIO is Establishment, and is a coward!~
That’s as lame an excuse as Geo. P. Bush constantly on his daddy’s campaign trail instead of in his office at the TX Capitol doing the job he’s being paid to do. Rubio and Bush are both stealing tax dollars by not doing their duty to their constituents.
A missed vote is a yea vote. Rubio is finished.
He’s got a point. If there was a chance of it being defeated, it would be worth getting to DC and voting. The vote was just cynical posturing by folks who thought they’d get away with passing the monstrosity. Rubio not voting said what we all know, that voting doesn’t matter in DC. It’s a rigged game.
Bush brought up Rubio’s large quantity of missed votes in a debate setting and Rubio still didn’t think this would be a big deal? Even for GOPe that’s really tone deaf.
Cruz and Paul are running for President and found a way to cast their votes. So Rubio did not think is was important enough to cast a vote on this legislation.
Rubio still skipped the vote probably because he’d lose either way: He’s lose by the grass roots conservatives IF HE VOTED FOR IT; He’d lose by HIS DONORS/CONTOLLERS if HE VOTED AGAINST IT!
You can’t have it both ways, Marco. COWARD.
His not being there to vote shows poor judgement.
A wise person would know that missing it would look bad and be used against him, especially considering his attendance record has been questioned in the past.
Absentee landlord is what Marco is. It is so Spanish. It has to be said. He rather be in Madrid then Havana. We have had 400 years to see which culture is better. North America or South America. Marco stay away. We don’t need a lazy ass like you for president. We have one already.
BINGO-—
He must have been screwing his girlfriend.
“...”Look, I’m running for president,” Rubio told Dickerson in Dubuque, Iowa... “
*******************************************************************************
EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES...Look Marco, you duplicitous liar, Ted Cruz is running for president also and that did not stop him from voting.
He is just a typical representative who doesn’t represent.
How convenient of him...he can say he didn’t vote for it thinking it will win him votes...NOT!
You nailed it right down.
Don’t you wonder why he wasn’t asked how he would have voted if he had bothered to show up? Would be fun to see him squirm, duck, and dodge.
Bastard didn’t want to have to defend his yes vote. It is very easy to call the bill grotesque since he did not have cajones enough to show up and vote yes for it while he is trying to con people into giving him a golden job that he won’t have to hit a lick at a snake to earn.
