LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to consider new ways of preventing violence in the community and workplace, including potential gun buyback programs and stricter controls on rapid-fire weapons. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas proposed that the sheriff, district attorney, probation chief and health officials develop a set of recommendations within 30 days.
"The recent horrific events in San Bernardino are tragic reminders that the Board of Supervisors must ensure it is doing all that it can to prevent violence in the community and the workplace,"Â Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said in his motion, which was approved by the Board of Supervisors.
The county has taken steps to combat the underlying causes of violence, including creating school threat assessment teams and mental health first-aid training for community members and county staffers, but Ridley-Thomas said it wasn't enough.
"Much more needs to be done in the face of a deeply troubling and recurring pattern of mass shootings,"Â Ridley-Thomas said.
His motion laid out a short list of options for consideration, including further background checks on the sale of guns within Los Angeles County, insurance for gun buyers (similar to car insurance) to cover any taxpayer expenses incurred from the injurious use of a gun, and taxes on firearms and ammunition. [Read the motion here.] http://file.lacounty.gov/bos/supdocs/99886.pdf
Supervisor Michael Antonovich said he couldn't support the motion because it included those options.
"I support the efforts at improving workplace safety,"Â Antonovich said.
Antonovich asked county lawyers to provide a legal opinion on the constitutionality of the proposed gun policies.
The U.S. Supreme Court refused last week to hear a Second Amendment challenge to a Highland Park, Illinois, ordinance banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, which was interpreted by some pundits as an opportunity for more local regulation.
Gun owners raised their own objections before the board Tuesday.
"You're stereotyping all gun owners as bad people,"Â one Antelope Valley resident told the board.
Comments at the link.
If Pearl Harbor were to occur today these morons would respond first by apologizing to Japan and then by passing some meaningless gun control laws.
And the US would unilaterally sink the remaining warships we had left..you know..to keep us safe../s
Why don’t they just make islamic terrorism illegal?
When I read "The recent horrific events in San Bernardino are tragic reminders that the Board of Supervisors must ensure it is doing all that it can to prevent violence in the community and the workplace," Supervisor Ridley-Thomas said ... I thought maybe they'd seen the light and were going to eliminate jihadis...
Silly me.
“His motion laid out a short list of options for consideration, including further background checks on the sale of guns within Los Angeles County, insurance for gun buyers (similar to car insurance) to cover any taxpayer expenses incurred from the injurious use of a gun, and taxes on firearms and ammunition. “
Explain how that is going to prevent terrorists and murderers from getting guns.
Any word on further restrictions on pipe bombs in LA?
Obama’s solution to SB is to restrict people on the no fly list from being able to buy a firearm.
What the heck does that have to do with the SB killings?
The firearms were bought by a friend who probably broke an existing law.
No doubt, it was an effort by Obama to make the attacks political and direct the heat away from him and the Democrats.
BRILLIANT! /s The left WANTS more Islamic terrorists in this country to slaughter Americans so they (the leftists) can FORWARD THEIR GUN GRAB AGENDA AND FURTHER STRIP AMERICANS OF THEIR SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS.
Wait, WHAT?!! Why are KNOWN suspected terrorists being allowed to roam our streets?
The answer to the question in post #11 is given in post #10. Okay, all finished. LOL
***and stricter controls on rapid-fire weapons.***
Need to remind these clowns that back in 1982 the VOTERS of California REJECTED Prop 15, to ban handguns in California. Therefore, all handguns should be legal for sale, including the high cap magazines and ammo.
Instead, the politicians have been working overtime finding all sorts of ways around the WILL of the VOTERS, one nibble at a time.
I’m guessing “mandatory carry” isn’t an option they will look at...
They should make murder a crime, pass a law!
That will fix things...
Sorry!
It would be “bad PR” for Obama and the Democrats.
Attention ISIS, Al Queda, and other Jihadis:
Attack here:
Lots of unarmed sheep ready for slaughter.
Note the change from “Assault Weapons” to “Rapid Fire”.
They are going after pistols next.
How would banning weapons stop hoax terror emails from overseas?
