Actually, Ted Cruz did make an indirect reference to (the stupidity of) gun control early on in the debate. It was in his discussion of the administration’s response to threats of terrorism in which he mentioned all of the efforts were aimed at American citizens, not the bad guys.

How about: “Thanks in no small part to the ineptitude and fecklessness of the Obama administration and former Secretary of State Clinton, America is faced with an increasingly greater threat of terrorism at home. And what is the administration’s and Secretary Clinton’s response? Disarm the American public so more Americans can stand or lie defenseless and wait to be shot like the victims in Paris and San Bernardino. Not under my watch!”

There is, frankly, no discernible public drive for additional gun control laws outside the usual liberal fever swamps, and the incessant drum beating is growing very old. Expect some serious baby bawling as the election approaches and it becomes crystal clear that they aren't driving the national agenda anymore. Many of them have no other reason for being in that profession, after all.
