Finally Rush Limbaugh Goes After Trump: "A Genuine Conservative Wouldn't Go After Cruz This Way"

First, if you haven't read Guy's piece about the Trump phenomenon, please do. You can find it here

During his show today Rush Limbaugh, who has been an avid supporter of Donald Trump to the point of equating those opposed to him to Hamas Islamic terrorists, criticized him for attacking conservative Ted Cruz as a "maniac" on the campaign trail.

"One thing here, I'm questioning the way Trump went after Cruz here, calling him a maniac, refusing to work with people in the Senate, the reason I am focusing on that folks is because it's so unlike Trump. I mean, that's a huge mistake, but, on paper it's a huge mistake. Trump gets away with his mistakes, such is the bond of loyalty his support base has for him that he gets away with them and I don't think he's made that many, don't misunderstand," Rush said (bolding is mine). "But for any of you that are holding out hope that Trump is a genuine conservative, even in the Republican field, would not go after Cruz this way. That just raised a red flag for me."

Rush is not going after Trump. He is sending him a lifeline explaining how he can win.

I’ve never seen such overstatement on FR - well, not in a week, actually.

I listened to the entire show and didn’t catch the drift that Rush was washing his hands of Trump. Just expressing disappointment in several statements.

Didn’t anyone hear the excitement in his voice when he read out the new poll that had him at 41 percent?? Rush lives to disappoint Trump haters.

I do not agree.

All the candidates tried a hit job on Trump already. They tried to let a woman do theirmdirty work and she failed horribly. It backfired.

The things Rush has said about others, would disqualify himself by that standard.

It would disqualify me. I have called idiots like Graham and McCain and Rubio and any number of others, much like we all have, doesnt not make me a genuine conservative.

I doubt very much that Rush does not support Trump. Rush is a very intelligent man.

Rush has actually been borderline unfair to Trump re: Cruz before.

In this case, Cruz went after Trump first, questioning his temperament and judgment—accusations which Trump merely mirrored back.

Does that mean that Cruz isn’t a true conservative, since he went after the base’s favored candidate—a candidate who is better than Cruz on things like TPP and amnesty for illegals?

I also know that Trump does not speak like this 99% of the time and that this is not his normal way of campaigning, and doubt it will be.

Y'all remember through the 1980s when the western U.S. was completely being overrun with millions of illegals through lawless violent borders? It rarely showed up on Rush's show, if ever. I guess football, feminazis and White House sleepovers at the Bush White House were a bigger priorities.

Are there other current candidates besides Jeb who also have close connections to the Bush dynasty?

I caught most of his program. Barely could find it within himself to report what Cruz said that set Trump off, and then it was garbled.

I watched a PBS documentary on Goldwater recently. They replayed the famous spot where a little girl is out in a field picking flowers and in the background a mushroom cloud begins to appear. The message was that Goldwater could not be trusted with nuclear weapons.

I remember well that the liberals used the same ploy against Ronald Reagan as a trigger happy cowboy who would be in control of our nuclear arsenal.

During the second debate, the first question to Trump was to refute a leftist type slur about his ability to control nuclear weapons that came from Jindal and some others.

Now, Cruz raises the nuclear specter with Trump again, and it would make anyone angry. I just wonder if Trump has said that about Cruz what some people would say.

nah, Rush was hitting Trump for almost the whole show for a 30 second statement Trump said in defense of a Cruz attack. THAT was the overkill. He spent about 2 minutes on Trump’s devastating attack on Hillary

Those little tidbits aimed at Cruz are laugh lines. Geez....Get a sense of humor.

But that behind our backs discussion about Trump by Cruz....not nice. Tells me a lot...and what I've thought all along.

Call me crazy, but my gut tells me this is orchestrated by Trump AND Cruz..

The fog of war, misdirection, complete lack of all the “PC media rules” their heads are spinning and the media is being completely marginalized in this cycle...

We’ll see.. I’m probably crazy on this, but the gut is screaming at me..

Either way, I’m loving the anti media election.

This is because Trump is anti-establishment, currently, and he is attacking the most A-E candidate in the bullpen by hitting Cruz. It really means Trump doesn’t care a whit about ideology, this is always been about winning by any means. If he has to be a chameleon he will be one, if gun haters start attracting votes, he will hate guns, if big bank haters start getting votes, he will hate big banks. His goal is winning, it is not advancing a conservative ideology, even though it is that which made the country great.

I think Rush is astounded that Trump completely reversed course on Cruz, laughably accusing Cruz of not getting along with people in the senate. This comes from Trump who has just alienated continents full of people, let alone the Republican establishment. The stones on Trump to attack Cruz on this is mind numbing. Doesn’t Trump read the papers and see the entire establishment from both parties and the media absolutely despise him. How is he going to work with people when he makes fun of them physically? And Cruz is the one with the problem?

I heard *most* of the show today, and I heard him say what was cited above. Concur with your assessment: sounded like Rush was more disappointed than anything else.

(I'm a Trump supporter, BTW if for no other reason than to blow up the GOP-E, having said that I didn't appreciate Trump going after Cruz the way he did either. Has me questioning Trump's temperament and judgement.)
