Is the tide turning against Donald Trump in Iowa? According to the latest Des Moines Register poll the answer is "yes."
The billionaire businessman and loose cannon extraordinaire has fallen to second place in the poll with 21 percent. He picked up 2 percentage points since the last poll, but is trailing Ted Cruz by 10 percentage points. The senator from Texas is now the favorite of 31 percent of Republican voters in Iowa.
There are two stories here. The first is that Trump has peaked in Iowa. The second story is Cruz's amazing surge. The senator is rapidly ascending; he has experienced a 21-point leap since the last DMR/Bloomberg poll. No other candidate in history has seen such a big surge in such a short amount of time.
The main reason for Cruz's rapid ascent is that evangelical and Tea Party conservatives are flocking to him. Jamie Johnson, an Iowa political operative, explains that there's another reason he's doing so well while Trump is stuck:
"Iowa's 11th commandment is thou shalt be nice. Donald Trump has violated this commandment one too many times. Now he is paying the price."
Considering how Trump talks about the Bible and Christianity in general, he probably doesn't even know the meaning of the word "commandment." It's not exactly shocking that he routinely violates one. Or two.
After the poll results were announced, Cruz took to Facebook to thank his supporters.
And The Donald? Well, let's just say he responded slightly less graciously:

This is par for the course with Trump. He's always criticizing everyone and everything unless they say he's in the lead. Then they're suddenly the best, most terrific and most reliable poll agencies or news outlets in the country. You'd laugh if it wasn't so incredibly sad.

Where can I find “Cruz defense?” A neighbor whom I see on a regular basis has told me he’s not the right man for the job because he “wants to shut down government.”
This woman is in her 50’s, and has been all over the place politically. Used to like Hillary, doesn’t now. Ditto Obama. Ditto Trump. Still soft on Bubba. Thinks muslims are quietly invading America and they should be banned from immigrating. She’s Jewish but thinks Netanyahu is a warmonger. She’s pro-2A and served in the Army (which she never lets anyone forget!) She’s big on government largesse toward citizens and against nearly all foreign aid.
She’s more than twice my age and considers herself wise, so I want to be tactful. But everytime I mention Cruz she dismisses him.
I think I could turn her around if my talking points were a bit sharper.
Cruz debating HRC would be interpreted by the left as a smart bully intimidating the nice lady. HRC supporters would not be converted or amused and would come out with daggers to the polls. So many of our little conservative voters too don’t like conflict of this kind: that’s why the GOP-e claims to “play nice” to Dems but would kill real conservatives if given the chance.
I predict this person will “come around” to HRC in November 2016 no matter what you say!
He must be, since the GOPe is scrambling to find someone else. Today's fave is Rubio. They're going to do something different this time, like run a young squish.
orig: Santorum beat Romney by a mere four points
correction: Santorum beat Romney by a mere thirty four points
FOX News poll coming out today has Trump ahead in Iowa.
I admire your tenacity. I would probably move.
She has said if it's Trump vs Clinton she'll vote Trump. Otherwise I wouldn't be talking politics with her at all!
I think this poll has been posted here well over a dozen times. I imagine the Cruzbots will post this outer poll a dozen more times before the end of the day.
Remember too, they called out the liberal GOPer Rick Lazio in 2000 for “invading her space”. Hard to believe that was fifteen years ago now
Just a shame he's a Canadian.
LOL! I could buy her house if it came to that. And she's ready to play cowboys&muslims when the call comes. But she is, I think, representative of an enormous number of people in this country, with her very muddled and poorly informed politics.
But if she “likes” her “Bill”, then won’t she convince herself that she can vote for HRC because “Bill” will run things any way. The “undecided” like her often make their choices for bizarre reasons. And so many, just won’t ever get over having “Bill” in the spotlight.
If ethanol was so great it would sell itself on a free and open market, Instead the government makes people put that corn crap into their cars. It's welfare for iowa, that's all. Cruz is Conservative. It he wins then say goodbye to your welfare payments.
You're making the fundamental error of assuming that all Hispanics are the same, that Mexican = Cuban = Puerto Rican = Guatemalan. Hispanics won't make that same error, not in a nationally important presidential race.
Not buying it.
(Carson)
IIRC, Cruz was for ethanol until fairly recently, wasn’t he?
Cruz does fight in the trenches, but he never bothers to bring enough troops along with him to win.
Results do matter
We get amnesty with every candidate except Trump. Only Trump says enforce existing immigration law. Cruz is for legal status for illegals. So every candidate but Trump means 20 million (60 million really with chain immigration) new Marxist voters and the end of the American Republic and the end of the American middle class. Elect anyone but Trump and the progressive globalist have won and we the people have lost. The Cruz supporters just do not get how important this election is. Ted Cruz needs to be nailed down on immigration. If we had an honest media they'd ask him in every interview if he would deport those in the country illegally, he won't, Trump will.
