Former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump at the same time that the billionaire investor and reality-television star was nearing a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men.
Four Trump allies and one Clinton associate familiar with the exchange said that Clinton encouraged Trump's efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party and offered his own views of the political landscape.
Clinton's personal office in New York confirmed that the call occurred in late May, but an aide to Clinton said the 2016 race was never specifically discussed and that it was only a casual chat.
The talk with Clinton - the spouse of the Democratic presidential front-runner and one of his party's preeminent political strategists - came just weeks before Trump jumped into the GOP race and surged to the front of the crowded Republican field.
The revelation of the call comes as many Republicans have begun criticizing Trump for his ties to Democrats, including past financial donations to the Clintons and their charitable foundation.

It is not a stretch of the imagination that he is friends with the Clintons, and may owe them a Uge favor.

When he starts attacking Cruz, and I believe he hill, his usefulness will be over.
I’m of the belief that if Cruz,Carson and maybe Rubio win, Trump will not run 3rd party. I think he will, and I think he should, if somehow, and I’m no political expert, but if somehow the establishment tries to put Bush in at the convention. I will be voting 3rd party or write-in at that point. (And I’m a Cruz supporter, but I’m glad Trump is our attack dog and not the Dems.)

About 1/7 of the delegates are directly or indirectly controlled by the party. If the convention becomes dominated by Trump and Cruz people, not only more numerous, but more aggressive, it will be over.
I attended the 2000 Independence Party convention where the Buchanan faction fought with the Farrakhan faction for the husk of Perot’s Party. The Farrakhan people had control of the machinery and all of the positions. The Buchanan faction had the votes and presence. The president of the party was a gentleman and allowed a peaceful transition despite the threat of a fight breaking out. He had to. He could count.

You are trying to defy gravity. I am 68 years old and judging from appearances, I am in far better physical condition than Trump; BUT, I guarantee you I would not put my pants on EVERY day and go out into this insane world and put my life on the line each second of each day by wading off into crowds and shaking millions of strangers hands in which any one could be a gun. George Wallace being but one example.
But, even more importantly, I would not put my beautiful and obviously beloved family at risk of being beheaded and on top of everything else PAY FOR EVERYTHING out of my own pocket!
Why? Why would he do this just “to play everyone like a fiddle”? With billions in the bank, one of the most beautiful women in the world for a wife, beautiful sons and daughters and only a few years left, maybe, WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH take this HUGE risk??? Why?
