Inspectors have discovered mold growing in heating and air conditioning ducts of the $1.2 billion U.S. Strategic Command headquarters under construction at Offutt Air Force Base.
The discovery of the mold, in September, has halted further work on the HVAC system in the massive structure, said Matt Bird, senior project manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is overseeing the job.
Other work continues at the 80-acre construction site, he said, but the mold-infested sections of ductwork will have to be removed. Military officials say the contractor, not the government, will have to pay for the extra work.

I saw on ‘This Old House’ where they removed mold from an attic by blowing in chopped dry ice onto the mold. The mold dried up and disappeared.
Is mold a protected species now?
Mold can be pretty nasty. I saw a case where someone died from mold in the house. It can make you very sick and sometimes hard to detect where the illness is coming from.
I would think that projects with lots of delays would face this issue constantly. You can’t expect air spaces to just go into hibernation because other aspects of a job are stalled. Something also tells me the until permits are processed and approvals are issued that power cannot be turned on, etc. I’m surprised anything gets built anymore with so much regulatory interference.
low voltage UV light would have been much cheaper, and I can’t believe it’s not regulation in construction today.
Duct seals are required and a daily inspection item.
Contractor might owe the work, but the inspector failed.
Ridiculous.
Guarantee they have temp power at least onsite.
Tools, trailers, etc.
Follow the standard, and inspect the work in progress and this doesn’t happen.
Probably from the illegals working for the subcontractors passing in the ducts rather than walking to one of the hundreds of portal potties all around the construction. They just recently finished enclosing most of the building after several wet seasons. It’s being built where the old golf course was with it’s water hazards and drainage creeks were and the summers are humid here with close proximity to the Missouri river.
They’ve rearranged mountains of earth to address drainage issues.
UV & Ionizers. Room ionizers work. Better to set up a commercial machine at intake of AH or air distribution. Works wonders!
The Contractor will bilk all he can with studies first then 50 change orders to get same results if any.
