Poll: Cruz surges to first in Iowa [Monmouth poll]

Stoked by evangelical and tea-party support, Ted Cruz has surged to first place in Iowa, according to the results of a Monmouth University poll released Monday surveying voters likely to participate in the Republican caucus on Feb. 1.

Cruz earned 24 percent of support among likely caucus-goers, with 19 percent opting for Donald Trump, whose polling advantage in the state has dwindled in recent weeks. In a Quinnipiac University survey conducted in mid-November, Trump held a slim 25 percent to 23 percent advantage over Cruz, while retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson finished with 18 percent.

In this survey, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio finished third with 17 percent, followed by 13 percent for Carson (a 19-point drop from October), 6 percent for former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, 4 percent for Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, 3 percent for former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina and 2 percent for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. All other candidates finished with 1 percent or less support, with 4 percent undecided and 1 percent describing themselves as "uncommitted."

I’ll take either one or a ticket with both. Eat this poll GOP-e. This is where AMERICAN citizens are at.

Yep, it was an easy call for the Carson “lead” too. The drive bys and pollsters are desperate to stop Trump. I’ll say again, I believe the polls. But I’m highly suspicious of those that show Carson . . . or Cruz . . . coming out of nowhere to “surge” ahead of the guy who’se been on top, everywhere, for six months.

He must really have a good ground game because I rarely see TV commercials backing him, only for Rubio or Bush.

I bet the GOPe is giving up on Yeb, and trying to push Rubio.
That is a very safe bet, my fellow FReeper. Rubio has already proven he can be corrupted by the Washington, DC culture of self-preservation and betrayal of conservative voters. That point has been made clear through Rubio's treachery in the Gang of Eight amnesty plot and his endorsement of Mitch McConnell for reelection. Rubio is definitely Plan B for the GOPe.

It’s show time.

Ted’s brilliant at strategery, too. I remember O*Reilly interviewing Ted a month ago.

**You*re going to have to do something big soon or it*s over, right?

You could see Ted suppressing laughter.

The man has no cross-over appeal at all. Democrat blue collar workers like Trump, they don’t care about Cruz at all.

Cruz isn’t an utter Mr. Perfect either, though he has had a promising beginning.

There’s been a lot of awkward excuse making for him with respect to how he has handled political hot potatoes in the Senate, how it really was a strategic move &c &c.

What would really let a breath of fresh air into the situation would be something like Cruz saying he’s reflected on that, and in future he isn’t going to try to figure out which end of a poop is the clean one. And even further, if/when such a situation arises in the Senate and he actually acts in accordance with that. Count me out, I’m not going to vote to let this anti constitutional atrocity go forward.

True, and this won’t show up in Republican caucuses.

It’s only one poll, and one I’m not a big fan of, but the trend lines seem very good for Cruz at this point. It’s all about watching the trends.

Trump is still in charge at this point, but he is starting to see some erosion. Ironic, since his bombast would seem tailor made after Paris and San Bernadino, but doesn’t seem to be building support after those two attacks.

Cruz is a great fund raiser, we gave to him several times already.

Trump I think did one radio spot and no TV, only web videos.
Trump better organize its a ground game in every town in a caucus state. Here in Nevada, only Paul has his people knocking on doors on my block.

The problem is that both Ted and Donald have similar views and that is good as long as they don’t let Rube Boobio win like Mitt did, because the base for their views splits their vote.

Go Trump and Cruz, and no low blows, lets not make the GOPe happy.

“Whether we are Trump or Cruz supporters, this should be happy news. The establishment GOPe is being dealt a 1-2 punch. No need to create a rift between the two groups at this time.”

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm just happy that the GOP hierarchy is in crisis. I'm sure they are freaking out and anything that twists their panties into a wad is OK by me.

Life is good.

I accidently stumbled into a ‘trump-bot’ thread the other day and W.O.W! Don’t try mentioning that Cruz is anti-establishment’ to them- they go ballistic- I also accidently made the comment that as the elections get closer, more people will want more specific answers from trump (and all the candidates really), and that his lead could erode- Again- Huge mistake- I didn’t dare mention that as the elections get closer, people with higher educations, who have been reserving judgment on all the candidates, come into play, and they usually go with proven candidates, and want to hear more than “I’ll do it, believe me I will do it”, They tend to want ot hear that the person they are electing ism ore than just talking points, and this is usually why you see early front runners begin to lose their huge leads

I think I’ll go out today and poke a stick in a killer bee nest- be less painful lol

You can believe the steady increase in support for Cruz is real and growing. Internal polling from another campaign in Iowa (not Cruz) confirms it. The ground game of the Cruz campaign in Iowa is awesome. From Texas alone, 500 volunteers will be traveling to and from Iowa between now and the Feb 1 caucus

and for the record, I’m not pro trump nor pro cruz at this point- it’s far too early to be making decisions that will affect the future of this country - We certainly need more than “I’ll build a wall, Mexico will pay for it. Believe me they will pay for it” (Maybe he does have a plan to get mexico to pay for it- but who the heck knows? He isn’t sharing it- I just don’t like when politicians basically say “You have to pass it to see what’s in it- trust me, you’ll like it”)

To be expected that the evangelicals would gravitate towards Cruz after Carson’s blunders. Iowa always goes for someone who mentions God a lot. I predict Cruz will win in Iowa, Trump second and Trump will win in NH with lardass Christie coming in second. Trump or Cruz will win SC. SC also has a lot of evangelicals but they seem to have more sense than Iowa voters. Southerners like a tough talker who believes in America and a strong military and someone who’ll get a handle on the illegal immigration problem. The state is tailor made for a Trump win. BUT, with that said, whoever takes Florida is the favorite for the nomination. Right now Trump is up on Ricky Ricardo Rubio.

Pretty good... holding steady. Probably now in the lead, among the group of 0% and 1%'ers.
