Islamic State releases its own smartphone app
The Telegraph ^ | 12/7/15 | James Titcomb

Islamic State has released its own app for Android smartphones, using it to spread propaganda from the terrorist group's news agency, according to a hacktivist group.

Ghost Security Group, a vigilante collective that aims to disrupt Isil's online operations, discovered the app. Links to install it are shared privately on the encrypted messaging service Telegram, rather than in Google's Play Store, allowing the app to being taken down.

It comes after Isil has faced opposition on mainstream internet services. Hacktivist group Anonymous says it has shut down thousands of Twitter accounts linked to the organisation, and Telegram has banned dozens of Isil channels. Using its own app would allow Isil to avoid such attempts to police its communications.

GhostSec says that the app publishes material from the Amaq News Agency, Isil's propaganda channel, according to The Times. This includes videos of beheadings and messages about terrorist attacks in various parts of the world.

Anonymous did something concrete other than spout unsubstantiated claims?

Guess I need to upgrade my flip phone soon.

What ever happened to “Radio Free America”? I remember seeing that ship while serving in the U.S. Navy.

What if the good guys could create an app that looks identical to the app ISIS made, only it has an additional feature of spying on the user. It would sure tell where the ISIS sympathizers are - at least the ones who use Android. Maybe such an app could mine a phone for numbers, names, addresses, etc. Hackers could break into ISIS’s download site and replace the original app with the spyware version. Even if this was successful for a day before being discovered, we could get an amazing amount of intel. How possible would this be or am I dreaming?

Markomalley, your graphics imply that this app is available for iOS and Windows Phone in addition to Android.

I did not see that in the article. Could you please provide a link to your source for that?

It’s called a joke. The app is not available via any of those sources (I don’t think to include the Blackberry store, else I’d have added that graphic as well)

The ISIS app is only Android. Apple has approved no terrorist apps for inclusion in the Apple App Store. However, there may be an iOS terrorist app available for jailbroken iOS devices.

Disinformation is not a joke, Mark. It does not provide anything of value when we are talking deadly serious issues about terrorism. Concentrate on where the problem actually exists, rather than use a shotgun approach. Terrorists use burner phones they can purchase for a few dollars, use anonymously, and then throw away. Apps are easy to get on Android and very difficult to get on Windows and Apple phones because their App Stores are curated and any app has to be officially approved before acceptance.

Get over yourself. You can sideload apps relatively easily fit any device regardless of OS.

Get over yourself, O'Malley. It isn't an easy thing to do and it requires more effort than you think.

This isn't a complete solution for everyone who wants side loading on iOS. It's a rather involved process most people won’t want to use, doesn't work with closed-source apps, and requires a Mac. It also won't allow you to run certain types of apps -- you can only use this to install apps that run within Apple's sandbox. Jailbreaking is the only process that allows you to escape the sandbox, so not every app available to jailbreakers can be installed in this way.

This takes deliberate effort to do. . . and is a complex, multistep process. So get over yourself. . . it is NOT something an average user will ever do. Live in reality, O'Malley, not in la-la-land.

I have a perfectly functional sense of humor, thank you. To be worth it, a joke must have a valid point. You know: humor, irony, a pun, something. What you did only creates confusion or misunderstanding, because it's just... wrong. It's like giving misleading directions to someone who is looking for something.

Maybe as they say, "You had to be there".

Ummm, better luck with your next joke.

You should consider looking up "black humor". It may be a concept with which you are unfamiliar. Allow me to draw you a picture:

If you would like to know the weather, you can download "weatherbug":

If you'd like to know the traffic, you can download Waze:

If you'd like to listen to some tunes, you can download Soundify:

If you'd like to wage Jihad, you can download the Isis app:

I'm sorry that your sense of humor is not sufficiently sharp to comprehend the idea of black humor. (The posters at #3 and #11 seemed to have understood this, so I assume the deficit is with the humorless, not with the jokester)

I'm actually a fan of black humor, and other off-beat types of humor, satire, etc. You might notice, if you re-read my earlier comment, that I remarked only that your attempt at humor (black or otherwise) fell short.

You, on the other hand, attacked me personally, assuming (incorrectly) that I have no sense of humor. I assure you, that was uncalled-for as well as inaccurate.

I have no further interest in your comments, but I do wish you a pleasant evening. Bye.

Thank you. And in lieu of an olive branch extended to a fellow FReeper, I'll offer what I would have done in the way of black humor on this topic. I hope you enjoy it!

If you'd like to wage Jihad, you can download the Isis app:
