The Post's View: Donald Trump is a poison pill for the Republican Party
The Washington Post ^ | December 5, 2015 | The Editorial Board

“I’M A negotiator like you folks; we’re negotiators,” Donald Trump said to the Republican Jewish Coalition on Thursday. “Is there anybody that doesn’t renegotiate deals in this room? Perhaps more than any room I’ve ever spoken to.” At another point, he remarked, “I know why you’re not going to support me — because I don’t want your money.”

These comments aren’t as objectionable as Mr. Trump’s talk of registering Muslim Americans, a proposal he has toyed with in the weeks since the Paris terrorist attacks, or when he mocked the physical disability of a New York Times reporter who dared challenge him. But they are of a piece with Mr. Trump’s near-constant use of cheap stereotypes and insults.

Mr. Trump is corrosive to the U.S. political debate in at least two ways. One is his basic contempt for facts. Mr. Trump simply made up his recent claim that he watched “thousands and thousands” of Muslims celebrating in New Jersey on 9/11, later justifying it by claiming some of his supporters remember similar events. Mr. Trump’s approach to truth — it is whatever I want it to be — uniquely threatens the notion that people of different identities and experiences can nevertheless conduct a civil dialogue based on the universal language of observable fact. Without this rudimentary principle, the American experiment in multi-ethnic, religiously diverse democracy is doomed....

I like that analysis.

Definitely will incorporate it into my own talking points.

WaPo would be the reognized experts when it comes to moral bankruptcy. That said, we can only hope they are correct in noting that DT would be a poison for the gop.

Here’s the buried mine set by Trump’s candidacy, maybe.

If elected as GOP president wouldn’t Trump become the the Head of the GOP just as Dubya was as a matter of custom and tradition?

His election would have some serious coat tails and could effect greater change in the GOP. Get rid of all those unknown to the public RNC stooges put in place by insiders.

There would be one very raucous battle if Priebus et al decided to keep fighting him after forcing a pledge so early.

Marcella, with your background and party work, what say you?

Is this the issue that has the GOPe hair burning?

Mr. Trump is corrosive to the U.S. political debate in at least two ways.

There is no single entity that is, has been, or quite likely ever will be as corrosive to U.S. political debate as 0bongo. Period.

It is Ronald Reagan vs Jimmy Carter vs John Anderson all over again.

Only if Bernie goes third party. If not, and the Donald gets dissed by the GOPe, it could be George Bush I vs. Clinton vs. Perot, which is a big piece of how we got to where we are now.

The Geriatric Old Plotters dying out would trouble me not at all.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the GOPe - a.k.a. the new Whig Party - finally up and died?

Indeed it would. They are just Fifth Column Democrats at this point, and have trended that way since 1989 which was a LONG time ago.

Yes, and it may very well become a NEW GOP. Not the corrupt crony capitalist party of the entrenched big government uni-party overlords, but a party of the liberty-loving, hard-working, Judeo-Christian patriots who want their country back.

Why go third party when the Trump revolution can take over the uni-party lock, stock and barrel?

Lock and load, baby.

I think that is part of it, but I think the lobbyists and super pacs are very worried because Trump doesn't take their money, and he wouldn't as President either...

The House and Senate are going to have to really get serious about standing up for America and it's legal American citizens...course I think a whole bunch are going to be done away with in this election so that might wake up the others that will be on the hot seat later...

A lot of programs are going to be cut, a lot of positions are going to be trimmed down, and some of the people are going to be out of a job, that's the biggest reason people are afraid of Trump....the legal American people want Trump but the others don't.....
