It is against to law to collect metadata on everyone. They can get a warrant from any court.

I do believe they have the grounds for a search warrant./s

well, mrshoop; if the NSA metadata was intended to protect us from terrorist attacks, it didn’t do a hell of a lot of good anyway, did it? But I’m sure the IRS and the White House got lots of good information on lots of Americans.
