Upstate New York sheriff urges licensed gun owners to carry firearm with them

ALBANY, N.Y. – An upstate New York sheriff is urging residents of his county who are licensed gun owners to arm themselves when they leave home, citing recent mass shootings in the United States and Paris.

"I urge you to responsibly take advantage of your legal right to carry a firearm," Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum, a Democrat, wrote on the department's Facebook page less than 24 hours after 14 people were shot dead in San Bernardino, California.

The post quickly drew hundreds of comments, for and against it.

"I'm not trying to drum up a militia of any sort," Van Blarcum told The Associated Press on Thursday. "It's just a reminder that if you want to, you have a right to carry it. It might come in handy. It's better to have it than not have it. We're partners with the public in crime prevention."

It’s better to have it and not need it, than not have it and need it. Plus, extra mags.

"I urge you to responsibly take advantage of your legal right to carry a firearm,"

How are people going to do that when the treasonous liberal punks in New York pretty have much have obliterated the 2nd amendment? Matter of fact, the incredibly corrupt governor who I fully expect to be indicted soon now that Sheldon Silver has been convicted, demanded gun control immediately after the terrorist attack in California. Before the smoke even cleared, Andrew "Evil eyes" Cuomo was screaming about gun control, one of the most corrupt governors in New York city history who is protected 24/7 by armed guards once again trashing the constitution. I cannot WAIT till they hand down the indictment of this puke, but then again what does it matter? The morons will just elect another corrupt democrap.

Companies with over ten employees ought designate at least two conceal carry workers.

Last May, two muslim terrorists dressed in body armor and armed with multiple pistols, rifles and 1,500 rounds of ammunition, opened fire at a public event in Garland, Texas. The only ones killed were the two terrorists. Why? Because there happened to be someone at the Garland event who could shoot back.

Gun control only prevents defense.

If he’s the sheriff he probably knows the
County judge and could facilitate cc policy in the county. Saratoga county now has unrestricted cc thanks to the new sheriff.

At least in Pennsylvania, a Sheriff does not have to ask you to carry.

If I were Sheriff I would be concerned with some of the individuals who live in my community.

Importantly, in Common Law, the Sheriff is the de facto head of the militia in his county, though this varies widely according to state law. This can figure prominently in several ways:

1) The “Hue and Cry”, Posse, AMBER alert, and emergency response. This is when the public are asked to voluntarily help the Sheriff in either stopping crime in progress, capturing escaped criminals, rescuing kidnapped children, or to help with disaster mitigation and response.

2) Public deputization. The Sheriff can deputize “All adults of good character” in his county (on a voluntary basis), requiring them (again on a voluntary basis) to be armed in public. Oddly enough, this would be done mostly to protect their 2nd Amendment rights against the possibility of federal gun confiscation, by making all these adults de jure (nominally) LEOs, so if the feds wanted to take their guns, they would have to disarm all the LEOs in that state to do so.

3) Sheriffs are considered the chief executive of their county, and so are authorized to declare martial law if necessary, in many states. So, for example, if a large number of Muslims or others showed up with intent to riot, the Sheriff could legally declare what they were doing an “unlawful assembly” and order them to disperse. Or else.

What's the matter with this Sherriff, anyhow? This is New York! Doesn't he know "it doesn't take more than 10 boolits to kill a deah?"

“Just how many licensed to carry NY’rs are there”

Don’t know the answer to that but I’ve heard both Sean Hannity and Donald Trump say on more than one occasion that the have CC permits and do carry (at least from time to time).

How are people going to do that when the treasonous liberal punks in New York pretty have much have obliterated the 2nd amendment?

Yes and no. With the exception of NYC and a couple other urban cesspools, NY law gives the county sheriff a huge amount of discretion in reviewing applications for a pistol permit, and the county court judge, who has the final say, follows the recommendation of the sheriff 99.99% of the time. In Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties for example, the sheriff rarely approves unrestricted concealed carry permits, but will approve carry permits for the range, hunting, place of business, and home. In many of the upstate counties, the sheriffs -- whether GOP or RAT -- are pro-second amendment and will issue an unrestricted concealed carry permit unless there is a statutory reason not to issue the permit (i.e., violent felon, drug addict, pyscho, order of protection).

I grew up in Dutchess County and have had an unrestricted concealed carry permit for 35 years. Like the Sheriff of Ulster County, who is the subject of this article, the Sheriff in Dutchess County (which is contiguous to Ulster County) is apparently a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, as are the Sheriffs in Orange, Delaware, Sullivan, Columbia, Greene, and many other upstate counties.

Regarding your 2nd point, I remember talking about just that in a Constitutional law class back in college. Had completely forgotten about it - thanks for reminding me.

Sadly, my Kimber 1911 .45cal ACP only likes 8-Round Wilson 47-D Combat Mags, so I have to carry 3 extras. Wish I could get some hi-caps for it.
