Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz says the wisdom of "Star Wars" can be applied to the campaign trail.
"An important question to ask of any presidential candidate is which 'Star Wars' figure would you be? And I got to say, anyone who says Luke Skywalker ought to be eliminated right off the bat. The only right answer to that is Han Solo," joked Cruz at a campaign stop in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Cruz called Han Solo the "coolest character in all of cinema" and said that he's loved "Star Wars" since he was a boy.
"I grew up on 'Star Wars,'" Cruz said. "You know my favorite memory is actually the second movie, 'The Empire Strikes Back,' which came out when I was 10. I remember standing with my dad in line at the mall for two, three hours to see it on opening day, and it was amazing being a little boy in the seventies and early eighties when these movies were coming out. I collected all the 'Star Wars' action figures. I had them all in a Darth Vader carrying case and with my friends we would play and fight them back and forth. I had a giant Millennium Falcon."
Cruz said that he even invokes "Star Wars" into his message to staffers on the trail.
"And you know I have to say there's a lot of wisdom wrapped up in 'Star Wars.' A message that I give to folks on the campaign trail, sometimes they'll say we tried. And my response is straight out of Yoda: 'There is no try. Do or do not.' And likewise if someone does something very impressive, I'll turn to them just like Vader and say, 'The Force is strong with this one.'"
Cruz said he's "excited" about the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

I’m glad Ted has a personality. What a well rounded guy.
How to tell when the primary season has gone on for too long:
1. When Star Wars becomes part of the repertoire
2. When the Nazi card is played.
3. When no one is dropping out.
The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V) was released on May 21, 1980.
CRUZ WAS ONLY 9 WHEN IT CAME OUT! HE'S A LIAR! < /NY TIMES >
TMI, Ted, TMI ...
What kind of lunchbox you had in 4th grade won't win you any votes.
I love Cruz, but I’m concerned he’s set himself up for a major Lucas putdown.
“I love Cruz, but Iâm concerned heâs set himself up for a major Lucas putdown.”
Actually, I’m expecting the Emperor of Hollywood to force Harrison Ford to make a non-humorous comment about Cruz.
You’d be surprised. This serves to humanize him with GenXers through common/shared experience.
I’d also note that he can talk Trek just as well as Star Wars.
Star Bores
Would LOVE to see Cruz respond to a Lucas putdown with:
“Meesa nosa caresa what George Lucsa saysa”
Not that thatll happen. But Lucas would be an idiot if he went after Cruz, given how Cruz kept the reference away from the deeper intellectual aspects of Star Wars. It would just confirm that Lucas is the complete a** most people think he is. Particularly after Eps I - III.
“Fascinating”
Yeah, but was your dad a mailman?
He was at least a kid when it first came out and it was almost 40 years ago.
LOL
Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi: “RNC headquarters: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.”
Bingo. Along with the cool street-art renditions of him - this all goes to a generation that may vote for him. And he is covering all the bases.
Actually it might.
The scifi/video game enthusiast side of him is winning over younger voters on the campaign trail. He goes down into the audience and talks with them about the Constitution, and then about popular entertainment. They relate.
Hillary would be Senator Palpatine.
He gets major points from me for this. I not only want to vote for him but would love to sit and schmooze with him about movies and games too. I’d have very little to talk to Trump about. Trump lost points by saying he was more interested in Harrison Ford’s role in Air Force One than in Star Wars. That’s as out-of-touch as it gets in terms of popular culture with the under-40 crowd.
