LIMA (Reuters) - Lori Berenson, a New Yorker once jailed in Peru for helping Marxist insurgents, is returning to the United States with her six-year-old son after finishing a 20-year sentence, her lawyer said Tuesday.
Berenson, 46, was making preparations to leave Peru "in coming hours," said Anibal Apari, her attorney and the father of her son. He declined to be more specific.
Apari and Berenson met in prison in 1997. He was also an inmate at the time.
Berenson was on parole for the past 5 years after spending 15 years in prison.
In 1996, Berenson was found guilty of supporting the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, or MRTA, a guerilla group active in the 1980s and 90s. She was never convicted of participating in violent acts.

I’d say she’d be right at home in Valerie Jarrett’s staff
actually, she supported the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, not the Shining Path. The Tupac Amaru were pro-Cuba Castroites.
I think her name was Jennifer Jean Casolo.
I watched some interview....probably around ten years ago and some idiot intellectual guy was asked to define the difference between Tupac Amaru’s Castro theme and Shining Path’s Maoist theme...and the best he could do was say they were both pro-communist.
The guards probably used her as a blow up doll, she deserved worse.
I think she should stay there. It looks like she made a life for herself in Peru, husband, child, and the child needs his father, doesn’t he?
poor baby /s
She supported the Shining Path, a group responsible for tens of thousands of civilian deaths, mostly peasants who refused to join in the revolution or killed in retaliation ...
A pretty despicable group.
SUNY college professor within a year.
Her prison name is “Swiss Chees”.
Time flies...
Actually, she supported the Tupac Amaru, not the Shining Path. The Tupac Amaru were not as radical as the SP, though of course that’s not saying much.
By all accounts, she was a sweet little girl who did charity work as a child and raised money for disadvantaged people, even doing a TV commercial while in grade school. Did she get brainwashed after getting to Peru?
To quote the late Eugene McCarthy on Willard’s daddy’s stance on being brainwashed into supporting Vietnam, “It must’ve been a light rinse.”
Maybe she hooked up with James Deen.
Fifteen years in a Peruvian prison will do that to you.
Sweet little kids grow up and not all of them make sweet adults.
I stand corrected. Peru is not my specialty
But it’s sort of splitting hairs, like saying which is worse in Colombia: FARC or ELF? Or which is worse? The abusayaf or the MILF here in the Philippines.
