LIMA (Reuters) - Lori Berenson, a New Yorker once jailed in Peru for helping Marxist insurgents, is returning to the United States with her six-year-old son after finishing a 20-year sentence, her lawyer said Tuesday.
Berenson, 46, was making preparations to leave Peru "in coming hours," said Anibal Apari, her attorney and the father of her son. He declined to be more specific.
Apari and Berenson met in prison in 1997. He was also an inmate at the time.
Berenson was on parole for the past 5 years after spending 15 years in prison.
In 1996, Berenson was found guilty of supporting the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, or MRTA, a guerilla group active in the 1980s and 90s. She was never convicted of participating in violent acts.

There was another similar young woman in the late 80s who got booted from
El Salvidor after the police discovered a bunch of arms in 55 gallon drums buried in the backyard of the house she was renting.
Cant remember her name. She came back to the US and went on a whirlwind tour of college campuses attacking Reagan and US policy in Central America.
She came to our campus and the YAF chapter showed up and sandbagged her during the Q&A session following her canned rant.
She flipped out, started spewing serious Marxist stuff. Afterwards a classmate of mine said they saw people pulling the videotapes out of the cameras that filmed her and pulling the tapes apart.
At first, I thought the father of this perp's bebe would be Joran van der Sloot, still doing time in the Peruvian prison system for the deaths of Natalie Holloway and some Peruvian woman whom he got preggers while en la prision.
This Joran-Joran guy sure knows how to relieve the tedium of his lonely cell in the land of the Incas.
