Good. It’s nice to see some country standing up for its military and citizens unlike our cowering Child-In-Chief.
Around siding with Turkey in this is in bed with ISIS.
Moskva and Charles de Gaulle close together, while Obama is doing his best to protect his pet terrorists from military attack. This could get ugly.
My concern is about Putin using a theater nuke on Raqqa, after his pilots were murdered. We would be at a whole new level then.
While I’m not exactly a fan of Putin’s - or Erdogan’s for that matter, in a situation like this, in which Russia and (presumably) Turkey are trying to destroy ISIS, a brief overflight of a corner of Turkish airspace shouldn’t necessitate the downing of a Russian aircraft. During the Cold War, we and the Russians violated one another’s airspace along the German border on several occasions and, while we locked on to one another’s aircraft, we never actually shot one down.
Given Turkey’s increasingly fundamentalist direction and allegations that they’re supporting ISIS from behind the scenes, I’m not necessarily inclined to side with Turkey, especially given that the Russians and now the French are the only ones putting a hurt on ISIS.
This is eerie similar to the way in which WWI started. with all kinds of alliances getting invoked when Austrian duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in Serbia.
Due to various alliances all of the European heavy hitters, including Great Britain and Russia ended up in one big war.
Now we could have Turkey, carrying out an attack that has nothing to do with NATO, possibly dragging NATO into a confrontation with Russia and its allies. Unless Russia does not retaliate.
Considering all the Arab nations in the Middle East, NATO, Russian allies such as Serbia, Iran and perhaps China. For good measure toss in ISIS in the Middle East and its terrorists around the world. Hopefully this is settled with minimum fallout, but the potential is there for big trouble.
So many parties could see this as the perfect time to go on the attack and stir things up.
.
Exactly. There was a reason we were concerned about violating Pakistani airspace for the Bin Laden mission.
It’s because we new were Pakistani sympathies were. The Russians know the same about Turkey.
I figure the US may have Turkey’s back, but the Chinese would have Russia’s back if this keeps escalating.
Just finished “Guns Of August” yet again ... can see how things escalated very quickly.
I do not see why the use of a tiny bit of airspace is a big deal. Why are they not on Russia’s side int he war on terror?
Fourteen months is way too long to wait for an Obama exit when things are like this. Obama is going to be traitorous war president.
Exactly. The Chinese and Iran will back Russia. Who cares about that unsigned agreement with Iran. It never meant anything but “give us the money” anyway.
Given the players involved, I do not see this ending well.
You’re right, it did escalate quickly. An interesting alliance that has just recently resurfaced in the last week, is that of Britain, France and Russia being on the same side.
With Russia beyond doubt taking on ISIS, will Britain and France automatically follow whatever actions NATO takes.
If the initial situation I initially laid out did come about, would be bad for Obama and NATO. Because you go from playing chess on 1 level to 3 or 4 level chess. That is above Obama’s pay grade and maybe even “neutered” NATO’s paygrade but not Putin’s and his allies.
Who would the Eastern European nations side with. They were very much in disagreement with the EU over the Syrian refugee issue. The EU was treating them they way they have always treated Eastern European countries. Which is “you can’t possibly understand these more complicated geo-political issues.”
I would tend to agree with you except for this; if this truly turned into a major conflict, a very complicated conflict, in such extraordinary circumstances, would the military continue to say Yes Sir, Commander in Chief.
IF Obama was wanting to chart a course quite contrary to what the military thought was prudent, would they follow.
I don’t know. Good question. Obama is really going off the deep end now that he no longer worries about re-election. I think he is becoming dangerous.
Turkey’s becoming a fundamentalist Islamic State...
First you have to define “we”. “We” elected a crypto-Muslim and not-so-crypto-Marxist whose administration is made up of Sunni Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers if not actual members. They have worked to cripple our military, our alliances, arm the enemies of Christianity and the West, open our borders, and if they could get away with it would disarm our population. So that “we” is now the one shown to the world as America. Turkey, under its current government, wants to resume the place the Ottomans held as claimants to the Sunni Caliphate and are covert supporters :of ISIL. Quite the mess “we” wrought back in 2008. Russia is Christian and defending Western values and “we” are effectively on the side of Islamic murder and conquest. It makes one vomit.
