Putin calls Turkey 'accomplices of terrorists' after Russian jet shot down - live updates

Putin warns of 'significant consequences'

Shaun Walker

Putin warns Turkey of “significant consequences”.

Speaking ahead of his King Abdullah II of Jordan in Sochi, the Russian leader gave said:

This event is beyond the normal framework of fighting against terrorism. Of course our military is doing heroic work against terrorism... But the loss today is a stab in the back, carried out by the accomplices of terrorists. I can’t describe it in any other way. Our aircraft was downed over the territory of Syria, using air-to-air missile from a Turkish F-16. It fell on the Syrian territory 4km from Turkey.

Neither our pilots nor our jet threatened the territory of Turkey. This is obvious. They are fighting terrorists in the northern areas around Latakia, where militants are located, mainly people who originated in Russia, and they were pursuing their direct duty, to make sure these people do not return to Russia. These are people who are clearly international terrorists.

Taking into account that we signed an agreement on deconflicting with the US, and as we know Turkey was among the ones that has joined the US coalition. Since Isis has such huge resources of hundreds of millions and billions of dollars coming from illicit oil sales, and they are protected by the armed forces of other states, then it’s clear why they are so brazen, why they are killing people, why they are carrying out terrorist attacks throughout the world including in the heart of Europe.

We will analyse everything, and today’s tragic event will have significant consequences, including for Russia-Turkish relations. We have always treated Turkey as a friendly state.

Putin warns Turkey of “significant consequences”.

I don’t think he means a strongly worded letter.

Do they want to make Nato serve ISIS? I understand that every state has its own regional interests and we’ve always respected that, but we will never allow the kind of crime that happened to today to take place. And of course we hope that the international community will find the strength to come together and fight against the common evil. - Putin

Russia will do nothing.

Why?

Well, it has three options. The first option is to do nothing, with the reason for this being that, while Russia is not weak, it is not as strong as it wants others to believe it is. Action would mean the inception of a convoluted decision tree of reactions and consequences, with some paths leading to WW3, others leading to a scruff-up with Turkey, and a few even leading to Turkey doing nothing. However, as Russia cannot influence that decision tree, it will do nothing as it is not as strong as would be necessary for it to do as it likes (unlike the US, which - leadership dependent obviously - can genuinely do as it wants/likes without fear of immediate consequences).

The second option Russia can do is what I call 'posturing.' By this, what it would do is to (a) escort every attack plane with a couple of air-to-air fighters (and this would mean Russia bringing several SU-27/30s into the region), or (b) moving up a couple of S-300 platforms nearer to the area so that their long range radars can light up Turkish fighters (and the S-300 can target the Turkish airforce while they are WITHIN Turkey), or (c) both. You'll see the Russians constantly lighting up Turkish fighters with radar, but no missiles fired.

The third option is for Putin to basically unleash ROEs and let Russian fighters/SAMs take out any Turkish fighter that comes close, damn the consequences.

I suspect it will be option 1.

It’s time somebody let Vlad know there are consequences.

I guess Ezekiel 38 is still far away. Magog usually understood as Russia. Beth Togarmah as Turkey.

This has the potential to escalate into a World War I type affair where nobody really knows who or what they are fighting for (A bad thing) or to signal the end of NATO (Which might be a good thing)

Or Russia and NATO could just pretend like there is nothing unusual happening

Turkey’s Erdogan is no saint either and I wouldn’t mind him getting some because he is an authoritarian ruler himself.

Where was the destination of those ISIS oil tankers that Putin took out?

I suspect it’s going to be Option 1. Putin’s latest statement is conspicuously missing any denial that the Russian aircraft HAD violated Turkey’s airspace ... which tells me he knows damn well that someone botched this on the Russian side.

I think we are blundering right into WWIII, and we’re doing it just like they did in WWI.
