A Facebook group criticizing the Staten Island Mall for canceling its Christmas tree-lighting ceremony and Santa parade has attracted tens of thousands of followers, energizing debate about the loss of holiday traditions.
The mall later apologized, announcing it would host a holiday celebration on Dec. 4 featuring Santa, a tree lighting and a toy drive.
"We heard the disappointment in your shopper feedback regarding the cancellation of the annual Santa Parade.
At Staten Island Mall, we pride ourselves on being a community partner and take our shoppers' sentiments to heart -- good and bad," mall officials said in a statement.

"If you're a homeowner, Glendale is a lovely neigbhorhood," said Kathy Masi of the Glendale Civic Association. "People don't come to Glendale to shop. They come here to live. Obviously it doesn't work for retail."
Patricia Safina, 45, of Glendale, said the community never really wanted the mall. "I don't think it's going to fly with the new shops or otherwise," she said.

Instead, ATCO Properties is working with Long Island-based Schuckman Realty on a suburban-style strip mall to be anchored by a supermarket with shops and restaurants.
It would be built on more than 6 acres of land, owned by ATCO, which currently houses Atlas Terminals and several stores. Current zoning permits the project to move forward without approvals.
The first phase, which includes 137,000 square-feet of retail space bounded by Cooper Ave. and 83rd St., is slated to open by fall 2015. ..."

âIt became apparent that the mall management was systematically removing anything related to Christmas from the mall,â DeMarco said.â
Then I’d remove my Christmas gift money from the mall. Pretty simple.
The Obamas are so edgy in an evil sort of way.
It seems like they have bigger problems than the Christmas tree.
