What is a Just War?
Virtue Online ^ | November 19, 2015 | Fr. John Lathrop

adical Islam (al-Qaeda, ISIS, or whatever name it goes by) has not only declared war but has waged war against United States, Western civilization and all Christians since September 11, 2001. This is more than terrorism, it is war, as witnessed by the recent attacks in Paris, the downing of the Russian airliner, the beheading of captives and the brutal war being waged by ISIS in Syria and Iraq. It is time for Congress to declare war against ISIS and all other radical Islamic groups. It is time for United States, its allies, and willing partners to use our considerable military power to destroy ISIS and all radical Islamic groups wherever they be in the world.

Is this a proper Christian response? Absolutely! St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and other Christian theologians over the past sixteen hundred years have developed a well thought out rationale for a Just War. This meets all the requirements of a Just War.

Here, this is the rest of it. This blog isn’t on the FR excerpt-only list http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1111944/posts

*********

First, we have been attacked and we have the right of self-defense.

Secondly, we have a good and just purpose in waging war against radical Islam. Radical Islam is a brutal totalitarian movement that is dedicated to the conquest, death and enslavement of all Christians and all Western nations. It is time to destroy radical Islam.

Thirdly, our goal is a just peace at the end so that tens of millions of ordinary people may live in peace and safety in their own countries.

Fourthly, a Just War is waged by the authority of the State. That is why United States, its allies, and partners must declare war and wage unconditional war against radical Islam.

It is time to call what is happening a war, and for us as Christians and as a nation to wage Just War against radical Islam.

Fr. John Lathrop, Dean of Appalachia, Anglican Province of America. He is based in Brevard, NC

You’re welcome.

Asserting that IS fighting the war.

Here’s the HTRN take, FWIW.

It remains a Christian goal to keep, preserve, and increase peace, as a benefit to the world that God so loved, as well as to serve as an attractive witness for the gospel. So in that sense, yes, Christians are called to pacifism.

In some extreme instances, the forces of hell and the occupants of earth can be so solidly married together in an evil love, that the most merciful thing to do is to dismiss those occupants from the earth, if their activity cannot be effectively contained. Sometimes God works this directly. Sometimes God calls people to have a hand in it, in a manner which is to be as He prescribes because the power of life and death is so dangerous.

The real people behind the current Islamo-vasion of jihadi boyz are the people who run our governments. These animals are societies changelings. Governments will slobber at your willingness to give up your liberties, process rights, God given Bill of Rights, and constitutional rights, just to let you know the additional 7,000,000 federal employees are keeping you safe and on a fresh bed of straw.

HTRN take: This folly is all being driven from hell. And it takes two groups on earth to tango this dance. Those who presume to be such perverted masters, and those who accept such perverted mastership.

Interesting comment on healing. HTRN take: be careful what you mean, and in what context. Healing powers can be had and they are the most precious thing in existence. Let’s not give them a bad rap. They will not progress to completed work in this world, and some will refuse it, which I think is getting at what you mean.

“Sometimes God works this directly.”

Please one example in the last 1,000 years of this happening.

Thanks.

With ISIS, unlike for a nebulous Islam, there’s a leader or set of leaders (the prince) and the named movement. It’s cruising for a crushing. Why it didn’t get one years ago is a marvel to me. Are we that paralyzed at this cult?

I’m not a Roman Catholic, but this particular systematization seems to make biblical sense. Christians don’t fight “as beating the air.”

As if God resets His possibility clock on that schedule or something?

I think you take many statements of truth as some kind of proffered excuse for inaction in a situation. You jump to unjustified conclusions that way.
