During the "Cuban Missile Crisis"in 1962 we were led to believe that President John F. Kennedy was standing up to the Soviet Union by demanding that their missiles be pulled out of Cuba and imposing a blockade.
But in a backroom in Washington, Attorney General Robert Kennedy was meeting Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin.
They cut a deal to withdraw Soviet missiles from Cuba in exchange for US missiles being pulled out of Turkey. Also apparently in the deal a winding down of Cuban exile raids on Cuba and a pledge to not invade Cuba to overthrow the Castro regime like was attempted at the Bay of Pigs in 1961.
I am reminded of this as word has come down in recent hours that Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard has been released from a US prison.
The BBC reports that 'last year it was reported that the US was considering freeing Pollard in exchange for the continuation of peace talks and significant concessions from Israel to the Palestinians'.
I thought there was 'bad blood' between Israel and the US as in Obama hating Israel and Netanyahu making his fiery speeches against the Iran nuclear deal.
We've learned recently via Rush Limbaugh that the fix was in to pass the Iran nuclear deal via the Republican's "Corker Bill" coming from Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee. It was done so trade and commerce could resume with the Iranian regime.
Its obvious to me that Israel knew the Iran deal was going through and really wasn't opposed to it. AIPAC, the Israel Lobby, will support Senators who supported the deal. So I guess Iran's nuke program was no big deal.
Bibi must have cut a deal with Barry and it looks like Pollard's release is part of it.
My gut sense is that Israel signed on the alternative policy to deal with Iran in exchange for things like Pollard being let out.
The notion of isolating Iran through the US-EU-Saudi involvement in the Yemeni and Syrian Civil Wars to take out groups and governments friendly to Iran.
Oops, that policy has led to the creation of Islamic State and the Russian intervention in Syria.
The Obama Administration said last year that it would release Pollard if Israel made concessions on 'peace talks' and 'the Palestinians'.
With Pollard's release, one does have to wonder how Israel and Bibi Netanyahu caved to make this happen.
I see the phoniness of the fight against the 'done deal' with Iran on nuclear weapons as a definite possibility.
Note this has been done on a Friday, the day when politicians want to hide from the public what they are doing.
Politicians like Obama and Netanyahu.......
I hate to think of Bibi Netanyahu as Bibi Boehner, but in regards to his push to get Obama to release Pollard and Obama's conditions mentioned above, one can only reach the conclusion that there has been a concession or concessions from Israel in this matter.
A bit troubling.
The question becomes, was Pollard really worth it? I know the Israelis wanted him back, but for Bibi to take one for the team for Pollard? I’m not saying “no” but did they really want him that bad, or was Pollard a gift, just clear out cell space for republicans.
I am a supporter of Israel...but El Rushbo did say the fix was in with Corker’s bill on the Iran nuke deal and Israel and AIPAC knew it I’m sure.
They are no dummies.
Glenn Beck made a very cryptic comment on his show some months back that he was a ‘supporter of Israel’ but not of the ‘people who support Israel’.
I think a reference to the AIPAC crowd who’ve had John McCain of Syrian intervention fame as a featured speaker in the last year.
Intervention in Syria to overthrow Assad was designed to contain Iran through taking out their ally and potential launching pad for attacks on Israel.
I think the folks in Washington from Obama to the GOP are containing Iran, cutting deals favorable for Iran and want to do business with Iran all at the same time.
Its like Nixon and Kissinger kissing up to the Soviet Union back in the 1970’s.
“Its obvious to me that Israel knew the Iran deal was going through and really wasn’t opposed to it.”
************************************************************
They may have surmised the deal would pass but to claim they were not opposed to it is to claim Israel is ok with Iran having nukes.
That is a patently absurd claim to make.
The alternative plan is containment through taking out the Iranian ally in Syria, Asaad. Its failed with IS being created and Russian intervention.
Also Israel is working with the US on anti-missile tech to keep pace with Iran’s nuke and missile development.
That was announced several years ago. Israel’s Iron Dome is working on short range missile attacks from Gaza already and now its being sold through a US contractor to the Gulf Arabs.
If one wants to play armchair psychologist, it is far more interesting to delve into the motivations of Barack Obama and ponder whether he hates Israel or the United States the more. Clearly, he is no friend of Israel, why then would he release its spy? A plausible answer is that he hates America the more and he despises its very existence so there is in his world no such thing as treason against an illegitimate and repressive land.
More likely Obama concluded that he undermines both the legitimacy of the United States by releasing a spy after having released murderous Islamists and he undermines the relationship between the United States and Israel by releasing an Israeli spy and generating a backlash. One can also not discount the possibility that Obama is cynically attempting to restore his relationship with the American Jewish community which is so rich with Donors
It is not likely that deals concerning the very existence of Israel living under missile range of Iran equipped with nuclear bombs would turn on the fate of Pollard.
or not
My point was that your claim Israel was “OK” with Iran having a nuke was absurd and I stand by what I said.
You’re right...Pollard has been in jail for 30 years, and that was my thought. I’m sure Israel wanted Pollard as a matter of principle, but I can’t see Bibi selling his soul for him.
I think that this is Obama clearing out the jails to make room for you and me.
The “deal” was “OK” because through containment by taking out Assad and anti-missile development by Israel’s defense industry and its American partners in the ‘military industrial complex’ Iran’s nukes could be countered as their program unfolded.
As has been said by Rush Limbaugh, the deal with Iran allows trade to take place and business to be done and that’s why Corker facilitated the Iran nuke deal with his bill.
Putting commerce ahead of Israel’s security is bad but was a deal done with Israel to go along with this scenario.
First, I wouldn’t want any of their jobs!
It seems to be such a complicated situation—but who knows? Maybe the parties involved are making it as complicated as they can.
I have also long been a supporter of Israel. Trying to figure out what the folks in Washington are doing at any time is WAY above my pay scale.
I don’t lose sleep over this but I think there’s some things done publicly to get us to like politicians and then they go into the back room to do things we don’t like.
I agree with you.
or, Bibi has Barack’s Columbia college records and made a request for pollard barack could not refuse
Nonsense! What choice did Israel have in the matter? Could they have STOPPED this “deal” with Iran?
Sounds like it’s again time to start collecting some JEWISH MONEY, and this time it takes some effort...since the Jews aren’t too hot about giving Iran nuclear capability.
Obama would not normally work with Israel but Pollard damaged the US and that moves him up in Obama’s opinion.
There was no deal. Pollard is being treated according to guidelines established years ago for his kind of offense.
