Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) warned his fellow Republicans on Wednesday not to place too much emphasis on Syrian refugees following the terrorist attacks in Paris last week, calling their focus misguided.
âI believe the overwhelming focus on the refugee program in recent days is misplaced,â said McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a written statement. âI especially encourage my fellow Republicans to recognize that refugees are not the problem â they are the symptom of the problem.â
Since attacks credited to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) killed at least 129, Republicans have called for pausing - or in some cases stopping altogether - a program to admit Syrian refugees into the U.S.
The House is scheduled to vote on a bill Thursday that would prevent any refugees from Syria or Iraq from being admitted to the U.S. unless the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and Director of National Intelligence can certify to Congress that each refugee does not pose a security threat.
While McCain said he agrees refugee admissions should be paused until law enforcement and intelligence officials can sign off on the vetting process, he said more emphasis should be placed on President Obamaâs insistence that his strategy against ISIS is working.
âThe refugee crisis we face today is a result of the presidentâs failed leadership and total lack of strategy,â McCain said. âNow, even after [ISIS] has demonstrated the capability and intent to strike the capitals of the western world, the president remains impervious to reality and refuses to change course from his failed strategy.
âFailure to address this problem at its source will only prolong this conflict, produce more refugees, and place our security at greater risk.â
McCain on Tuesday also broke with some in his party, saying the refugee issue shouldnât be linked to the government funding fight and there should not be a religious test to determine which refugees enter the country.
McCainâs Wednesday statement also echoes his House counterpart, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), who said Tuesday that stopping refugees does not stop ISIS.
âThatâs not the only threat ISIS poses,â said Thornberry, chairman of the House Armed Service Committee.

No one cares what you say Paw-Paw! Sit down and shut up!
I don’t know which is worse, our buffoon or their buffoon. Oh, okay, their buffoon, but it is a close contest.
McCain armed ISIS and started the IRS Atrocities.
Arizona is now behind slavery, rape and crucifixion
world wide because of McCain.
Where’s the “Oh no, not this s*** again” guy?
FUJM !
If you feel that way John then those refugees can be placed at your home.
“refugees are not the problem, they are the symptom of the problem”
A symptom that CONVENIENTLY showed up this Summer after 4 FREAKIN YEARS OF WAR????????
Retire already, ya old coot.
Tell that to the families of the people who were murdered by Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the Boston bombings.
Time to drain John’s drool cup...
There was a time we believed that age brought wisdom.
It ain’t necessarily so.
McCain never misses a chance to help his buddy Obama and his Democrat brethren. And if he can bash Republicans along the way, all the better.
The poster child for a mandatory Senate retirement age strikes again.
Focusing America, Americans and their security and safety is something McLame is incapable of, he seems to believe he was elected by foreigners and owes his allegiance to them.
McCain is doubling down on stupid? NOT a surprise. Will Lindsey Girl join him?
Kindly refrain from posting anything about this demented old fart.
