In a final statewide TV debate Monday (Nov. 16), Democrat John Bel Edwards and Republican David Vitter began making the closing arguments in a wild gubernatorial campaign that often took on an angry tone.
The two men came out swinging as the debate opened with a question about Syrian refugees; it ended with Vitter making a personal appeal to voters for forgiveness for his prostitution scandal and Edwards making the case that he's the best leader. In between, both men fumed at each other for a series of attacks that each said was a distortion of his record.
It was the last time the candidates had a chance to speak to a statewide audience before voters cast their ballots Saturday.
Vitter, who is trailing in the polls and is closing the campaign with the argument that he's the only true conservative, tried to paint the anti-abortion Edwards as an undercover abortion rights proponent. And he sought to tie Edwards to President Barack Obama -- a frequent tactic he's deployed throughout the runoff -- in his position on Syrian refugees.
"I have a consistent record of standing up to President Obama fighting for border security, fighting for national security," Vitter said during the debate, which was hosted by WVLA-TV at the Dunham School in Baton Rouge. "My opponent has staked out a very different position ..

Yes and no. The problem is that KY has only voted on two* occasions for the GOP Gubernatorial nominee since after 1967.
*The likelihood is that the 1995 race was stolen by Paul Patton over Larry Forgy (so that would be 3 times). No indication for 1996 (a winnable race, but Dole wasn’t the right challenger).
Patton was effectively unchallenged in 1999 (the GOP candidate was a desultory flake that they gave no support to). That was no indication for 2000.
2003 marked 36 years since a GOP victory, and that was almost a given for Dr. Fletcher. Had the corrupt scumbag Democrat Stumbo not waged complete war from the AG’s office to trump up charges against Fletcher (Fletcher daring to hire GOP state workers ! The horror !), he would’ve won reelection in 2007, so this was a stacked deck (though I would say so was the stacked deck fake election in 2008 with a designated loser/ringer in McQueeg against Zero).
Beshear was defeatable in 2011, but a subpar GOP nominee and third party candidate split the opposition (so this again perhaps reflected the national scene for ‘12, with a second-in-a-row designated loser/ringer in Willard).
I have to wonder with Bevin if he made a last minute rally, or if he was ahead almost all along given the messed up polling data (overpolled Dem). Despite the concerns regarding Bevin, I regarded him as the strongest nominee over Hal Heiner and James Comer, since there was too much bitterness between the two others that would’ve spilled over into the general that would’ve cost us. Bevin was able to unite the primary voters.
Hopefully this will be a positive harbinger for 2016.
The people of that state, and Edwards would give them AIDS.
In the aftermath of the primary in which Vitter received only 23 percent of the vote, most of the others switched to Edwards, who had almost 40 percent. People in LA like to stick with their political positions once they have made up their minds.
Like I said, when a LA person makes up his mind, he is not easily persuaded to reverse course. Certainly not in a three-week period
Hard to believe Vitter will lose. Edwards is an out of nowhere nut job.
I hope, but doubt, Gov. Jindal is watching the polling places in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Not like he’s running for president anymore!
Cheating on your wife is baggage? Since when?
Oh wait, I forgot he’s a Republican! /lol
Hopefully Jindal is at least trying to contribute to a Vitter win!
Sure but the three polls currently used by RCP all seem to have questionable accuracy in the past. Then we have this in depth article about the race.
