Cruz jokes about his 'Rick Perry' moment

Cruz: If the GOP embraces amnesty, Hillary Clinton will win (video)

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is making light of his struggle during the latest GOP debate to list all of the federal agencies he would eliminate as president.

"Look, I just think the Department of Commerce is such a base of cronyism, we need to eliminate it twice," Cruz joked during a post-debate appearance on Fox News's "The Kelly File."

Cruz struggled to list the five agencies he would eliminate as president during the Republican debate Tuesday night, listing the Department of Commerce twice.

"Five major agencies that I would eliminate: the IRS, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, uh, the Department of Commerce and HUD," Cruz said.

Many political observers compared the segment to a similar moment from then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry's disastrous "oops" moment during a GOP debate in the 2012 presidential election.

Unlike Perry's highly publicized moment, however, Cruz did not allow for any pregnant pauses amid his hesitation in the prime-time debate segment, quickly carrying on with other points.

Cruz told host Megyn Kelly that the fifth agency he would eliminate is the Department of Education.

That’s the problem with Fedzilla. There’s so many sacred cows to gore, it’s hard to keep track.

Yeah he lost that one department.

Of all the really good points he made last night this is the third reference to this slip I’ve heard this morning.

If thats all they’ve got the ol’ Ted must be in pretty good shape.

I noticed that he listed Commerce twice but it was really minor. Cruz was and is always the most elegant speaker in a debate. I imagine a lot of folks didn’t even catch it.

I was watching and didn’t even notice. Way different than Rick Perry.

Okay, fine. Now Cruz needs to take advantage of all the air time this is going to generate and point out that not one student has ever graduated from the Dept. of Education, not one job has ever been created at the Dept. of Commerce other than the gargantuan bureaucracy, the Dept. of Energy has never created on watt of energy, etc.

I imagine a lot of folks didn t even catch it.

I didn t catch it and then when it was mentioned later, I thought, yeah? And... this is a big deal?

The important thing MAY BE that Ted is the only one who's talking about ELIMINATING entire FEDGOV departments. Maybe. Just possibly.

The Dept of Education which educates no one, but installs ropes on every educator in America to tie them to the whims of theorists and puppeteers.

I heard it and wondered what is it about guys from Texas that they can’t remember what gov’t departments they want to cut. Cruz handled it better though.

Is the Dept. of Energy the same as the EPA? If not, we need to eliminate that too, or severely curtail it.

When I heard him start listing the departments I thought “don’t forget one like Rick Perry” and then I heard the briefest pause and Commerce a second time.

He handled it much better than Perry did.

Conservatives instantly filled in the blank for Cruz in their own minds and moved right on with what he was saying!

Surely, intelligent viewers understand that a constitutional scholar like Cruz would include the Department of Education in any list of unnecessary arms of their federal government.

I’d say the Education Department is the one that can easily be shut down. All others would require some type of replacement.

Nope.

The DOE subsidizes windmills.

The EPA kills coal mining jobs.
