The circular firing squad takes its toll on Republicans
The New York Post ^ | November 7, 2015 | Michael Goodwin

Posted on 11/08/2015 4:01:47 PM PST by TBP

All the GOP guns are blazing — at each other. Mutual destruction makes it hard to win an election, and easy to lose one. Just ask President Mitt Romney.

The brutal attacks he endured in the 2012 primary softened him up for the Obama juggernaut in the general election. Obama’s claims that Romney was a greedy capitalist who destroyed middle-class jobs echoed charges made first by Newt Gingrich and other Republicans.

Trump is the master of insult this time, and takes pleasure in slashing his rivals. Truth be told, he’s good at it, with his mocking of Jeb Bush as low energy crystallizing a sense that Bush didn’t have fire in the belly and starting his slide toward the bottom.

Business as usual. GOPe wants everybody to settle down and get ready or Jeb or Rubio. Unlike the Dems, the Rs have a backup.

This from Rupert Murdock owned/controlled NY Post? The same Rupert Murdock who owns FoxNews that did his best to take down Donald Trump?

Shame on you for bringing reality into this train wreck post. /S

I am hopefully optimistic that those days are over.

Trump or Cruz could change things.

It depends on which Newt you are talking about. Speaker Newt or sitting on the couch with Pelosi Newt.

“I’ve now narrowed my top three to Cruz, Cruz, and Cruz.”

I agree, agree, and agree.

Senator Cruz is the only true conservative that could beat Hillary Clinton in a general election. Mr. Trump is not a true conservative or any form or conservative. Even if Mr. Trump could prevail against Hillary Clinton in a general election. I do not believe it would be a “victory” for conservatism. Therefore, I cannot support him.

Oh, by the way, I am not a big supporter of Senator Cruz. I just think he is the best choice of those running that are truly conservative. I have given up getting emotionally involved in “my” pick for POTUS. Senator Cruz is the rational (not emotional) choice for a conservative.

Oh Canada....Love Cruz but the lack of democratic crickets chirping about his birthplace and eligibility worry me.

Wow. Do I really have to say how big the lies are that are encoded in that sentence!

As soon as I saw this, I stopped reading. Using Romney as an example is ridiculous - he was already soft before any attacks he may have taken during the GOP primaries (but I'm sure he wasn't just on the receiving end). He could have fought back against Obama, but he chose not to.

The reason they CONTINUE TO SUPPORT RUBIO is because they know what he’ll do regarding Amnesty, should they be able to get him into office.

Kinda narrows down what the real issues are, doesn't it?

Wagebreaking and vota democratica.

PBS recently ran a panegyric to that Chicago cockroach who is the House 'Rats' floor manager for open immigration. They were blind to the hate pouring out of him -- he literally hates white America, and it shows. Funny how the liberals either don't see it or don't care.

The more I read, the more uneasy I am about evidences that Cruz e.g. has compromised with big financial backers on immigration -- as someone was pointing out on another thread, his silence on the status of illegals is deafening, especially since "voluntary self-deportation" remains a viable possibility.

Still, as you say, he's the most conservative viable candidate available.

But as yet another FReeper pointed out, the e-GOP has stacked the primary/caucus deck for three years already, and we will have the spectacle of Yeb! being awarded majorities of delegates in States he'll lose in the primaries.

The GOP has a long history of pulling stuff like this, notably the infamous machine-dominated 1912 convention, which half the delegates bolted, rubbing pieces of sandpaper together and blowing on tin whistles to simulate the noises of a big machine. President Woodrow Wilson was the result of all the Big Money manipulation.

Cruz plan to drastically expand H-1B Visas concerns me, but I have not seen anything on his stance regarding illegals on threads. Do you recall which thread?

I would suggest a general metasearch using Dogpile.com (to defeat Google bias), keying on likely search terms (I personally am weak on search, or I'd give better suggestions, sorry).

My personal experience with the FR search function is that it works with keywords and titles only.

I suggest you reconsider your reservations, for the following reasons:

1. Cruz's contention that the current focus should be on securing the border is certainly valid. No meaningful action whatsoever against illegal aliens can be undertaken until the border is secured. Consequently, talk about future actions is pointless speculation until the #1 job is done, thus, a distraction.

2. If we consider the illegal aliens "invaders", then we should essentially consider ourselves at war with them. At the very least, it is an adverserial relationship...and will be fought out on the legal front. In which case, it would be unwise to reveal our objectives, strategy and tactics ahead of time. We would only be alerting the enemy, allowing their army of lawyers time to prepare.

3. Accordingly, if our strategy is based on self-deportation, forced by a.) enforcement of workplace laws, b) denial of benefits, c.) enforcement of visa laws, while d.) pursuing the end of birthright nationality, we wouldn't want to forewarn the targets. It would likely force them deeper into "the shadows". Instead, let them deal with the consequences as they occur.

4. After all actions have been taken to encourage self-deportation, we'll take a look at what's left to do and develop the best course of action.

Cruz is himself a lawyer -- a highly capable one. The illegal alien war will be fought on the legal front. Cruz knows how his adversaries will think and react. Accordingly, he is playing his cards close to the vest on this particular issue.

Regarding the H1B issue: You realize that was only part of a compromise amendment to the Gang of 8 "comprehensive immigration reform". The increase in H1B visas was designed to reduce overall allowed immigration. In the absence of "comprehensive immigration reform", there is no need to promote an increase in H1Bs.

Anything I have read or heard to date does not alleviate my concern that Cruz and his wife just might be to cozy with big time money interests and not want to stop the flow by any means of immigrants being given advantages over true citizens.

Yes, of course. Cruz is compromised because his wife worked in a branch office of Goldman-Sachs.

Shiver.
